"I asked JES to inspect our foundation to determine if we had a foundation or drywall issue. Ben did a thorough evaluation and told me that we did not have a foundation problem. I appreciate his honesty and would recommend JES."

"I am unhappy with the end result. The kitchen tile is okay however, after paying an extra $100 to have a wood trim install in my foyer entrance, I have been living with a defective product since late March. The trim is being held by a bucket full of book to prevent us to trip and hurt ourself. Contacted the company more than once , was promise the problem would be fix however, I am still waiting."

"Michael did a wonderful job, but my concern lies with the communication between him and Angie's List. I had traded his services out for anther Handyman Big Deal that did not show, yet Angie's List failed to notify him of the purchase. When he did get here, he was very thorough and efficient.

"The appointment was set up via email. There was no confirmation phone call, but they arrived at the appointed time. The scope of the job and the cost were explained. Care was taken to cover all furnishings with plastic before work began. They did take some time to purchase supplies that I did not have.
The repair was done very well. The walls look like new. The employees were courteous and efficient. They also did a good job cleaning up when they finished the job.  I would use them again.

"Gibraltar was too busy with other jobs at the time, and he wasn't responsive enough. He gave us an estimate and then we were trying to get more information as we were getting other estimates, and I could not always reach them. The day they were supposed to come the first time, they did not showing up because the car broke down. We did not follow up because if we were having problems before the service, we would have a problem after we paid them. They were fair in pricing. We called two other companies, and they were about the same price, although Gibraltar's measurement of area was off, and so they calculated more area, and the quote was more, but once they corrected the area, they were fine. We had also purchased a big deal for backsplash, but because of their incorrect measurement, and non-responsiveness, we decided not to go with them for both. It is difficult to contact them, but I cannot judge their work because there was nothing done. "

Egress Windows questions, answered by experts

Basements are generally required to have windows for your safety. At a minimum, windows should provide an egress in the event of a fire. But basement windows do more than offer a way out; basement windows also offer natural light and ventilation in an area of your home that is otherwise dark and musty.

You install a window well 8 to 12 inches deeper than the base of the window sill. After filling the well with drainage rock, the well should sit 3 inches below the bottom of the window. The top of the window well should also be at least 3 inches higher than the surface-grade ground. The window well should be about 6 inches wider than the window opening.

Egress windows require regular maintenance to ensure they function correctly. This includes cleaning the glass, inspecting the frame and well for debris, and making sure the cover or well drains properly. It is also important to check that the window sills and wells are watertight and to inspect and repair any damage to the window frame or seals to prevent leaks and maintain functionality.

Costs depend on window size, type, material, and labor. Custom shapes or sizes typically incur higher expenses; full installation includes removing old windows.

Because egress windows are meant for emergency exiting and entering, they need to be an accessible size. The smallest an egress window is allowed to be is 15 inches in width and height, with an opening of around 4 square feet.
