"I had 2 projects done; a bookcase in place of a banister and a built-in bookcase with closed cabinets in the lower level of my townhouse. Both projects were very well done and I am extremely pleased. Brandon is meticulous and a master carpenter."

"We have normally done interior painting ourselves, but this was a big job (living room, hallway, bedroom) and since we also had some ceiling damage from a leak we decided to get it done for us. We had used Jim the Handyman for a couple jobs last year and were very satisfied with the work so called them again. They showed up early to do the estimate and we discussed a number of items to be priced so that could pick and choose if need be. We quickly got an estimate and agreed to getting the work done. It was supposed to be a week to a week and a half out from the Thursday estimate date but they called the next Sunday afternoon and said they could begin the job Tuesday (finishing Thursday). We said yes. Mike showed up within the 9-11 timeframe on Tuesday and got right to work.. He was the lead guy for the three days, directing others who came to help. Very impressive. Not only does he know everything about how to paint, he knows how to manage a job. And he is a pleasant and friendly guy on top of that. The crew prepped, painted, and cleaned up. They made sure the job was done right (no need to follow behind and check on their work - they do their own quality control). We supplied the paint and spent a day getting things off the wall and some things moved. We have a lot on our walls and so I spackled as things came down. We could have left it, especially the wall repair. Mike could immediately tell what had been done and went back and did it correctly. We probably would still take things off the wall to prep, but the rest we would leave to their crew. The areas of the ceiling that were damaged are back to looking perfect. We had some paint bubbles in one bathroom ceiling - also corrected - and with a better paint choice that Mike recommended. The new door and door frame were more of a challenge for the guy who came to do the work because the one jamb was a little out of plumb (our house was built in 1961), but he got it done. We are very pleased with the experience, the quality of the work, and extremely pleased with the finished result. Its like having a new home."

"Guy is a 40 year professional carpenter. I have been doing many of my own projects for the last two decades and I am no where near the skill level of Guy. He is a crown molding expert. Meticulous and nice. Best hire I’ve had on Home Advisor. Go with him and you will be happy."

"Great. Mike and I talked briefly through Angie's List messaging system, I described what I needed, he quoted an hourly rate along with estimate of time needed, we set up a time and were good to go. Showed up on time, I explained what I needed done showing him each item and he got to work. Kitchen faucet: I thought it was just a bad washer or o-ring, but it turned out to be a plastic part (that interacted with a metal part) that had worn out deep inside the faucet, which he found by disassembling the faucet. Showed me where it was and what it did, and unfortunately there was no replacement part available. Also explained that he had seen black/rusty water when he was taking things apart and the valve/lines under the sink needed replacing too. (This explained some odd tastes we were getting from the sink water.) He asked me what type of faucet and quality level I wanted (cheapest, most expensive, middle), went out and bought it plus the other needed parts, returned and installed it all. Works great and the water doesn't taste odd anymore. What I thought was a simple job turned out to be more complex and longer. Bathroom sink faucets: Fairly straight forward replacement, though he did have to shorten the connecting rod connecting the drain plug to the post you pull to close the drain. There isn't much space under the cabinets! Also pointed out a small leak in the pipes underneath, which he fixed as well. And he cleaned out all the build up in one of the drains so it drains promptly now. Toilet: Replaced the clogged valve in a jiffy along with the feed line and the tank hardware, and now, instead of taking 20 minutes to refill, it refills in a short time, stops when it's suppose to stop, and doesn't leak. Bathroom: Removed the towel rack, moved and leveled the shelf. And, he tightened the nut holding the toilet seat cover onto the toilet without even being asked, just because he noticed it. (We had lived with it after my attempts to tighten it hadn't worked.) Kitchen cabinet: Removed the drawer and pointed out that the wheel rails can spread at the back, from use. Closed the spread and now the drawer slides in and out perfectly. (I felt dumb for not having figured that out, but now I know.) Cleanliness: He had canvas drop cloths to catch any dirt or grime he generated as well as for protecting the floor. Had a trash bag for any trash generated (such as the faucet boxes) and used it as he went, rather than gathering the trash at the end. Honesty: Even though he ended up doing several extra things (valves and lines under kitchen sink, fixed a leak under bathroom sinks, toilet seat cover nut), I did not get the vibe that he was finding these just to do them and earn more money. The kitchen faucet issue agreed with what we had already observed, and the leak in the bathroom sink cabinet was real and (obviously!) needed fixing. And the seat cover nut, well, that was just a nice touch. All in all, I am very pleased with the results. Very pleased with his attitude and willingness to dig in to get the job done and working until it was. He explained the extra work needed as he found it, and didn't bother me unduly (I had my own work to do, as well, working remotely that day). And when I stepped over to see how it was going, he gave a precise update. He had all the tools needed (most of which I don't have, such as plumber's putty), and he had several spare parts in his truck so he wasn't constantly driving over to Home Depot. In short, he came prepared. Turned out to be 8 hours of work instead of the original estimate of 5 or less. Charged by the hour, and for the faucet and valve and bit of pipe installed (about $200 in parts). I like that flexibility, rather than charging a flat rate for a block of time (4 hours or 8 hours is what I've seen elsewhere on Angie's List site). The rate was competitive and I tipped him as well. The amount indicated in this review is for parts and labor only."

"Munoz Construction has completed two projects in our home and we are extremely pleased with their work. The most recent project was a kitchen update wherein they replaced the countertops, backsplash, downdraft exhaust fan, spice cabinet pull out organizer, sink, faucet and disposal switch. They also did some carpentry work, repaired and painted drywall, and coordinated the installation of the new countertops as well as repurposing the granite from the kitchen to the basement bar area with the stone contractor. Jose and his team (Pedro and Armando) arrived promptly each morning and were a pleasure to work with. They were always respectful of our home; laying down drop cloths to protect our floors and thoroughly cleaning up the work spaces at the end of the day. They worked tirelessly to solve complex issues and create innovative and cost saving solutions. Munoz Construction is the only company I will use going forward because of their professionalism, excellent communication, trustworthiness, value and exceptional quality of work. Jose Munoz won’t settle for anything less than an outstanding finished product. I highly recommend this business for all your construction needs."

"Davis Contracting was one of the few companies that called back and he came to see the job on the same day. Alexander has a fabulous team; they are craftsmen. They had to put my deck back together some of the crew did the power washing and some did repairs and some completed the building portion and some did the staining. This was a big job. They pressure washed two large decks repaired all necessary lumbar and stained everything. They also had to move lots of furniture. They were just terrific."

"I worked with Junior and Sharon to design the plan and pick out materials. The design was a bit unconventional and required moving walls, piping and rerouting plumbing and electrical to keep a tub and add a double vanity. Junior and Sharon were professional, responsive and very enjoyable to work with. Their connections with tile, paint and supplies made selecting the products easy and fun, as well. They have a great eye for detail and design! Junior had stated it would take 6 to 8 weeks to complete my project. As most projects have issues that come up, I anticipated it would take longer. I was more than pleasantly surprised when the job completed in just 5 weeks, including a week "off" due to my vacation and waiting on a backorder. Junior's estimation was right on the money! Finishing the job earlier than expected is amazing. Once the project began, Jason, the general contractor, gave daily updates by phone in the evening and came to the job nearly every day to handle the project. Jason is professional, prompt in responding and easy to work with. On site, Henry, the crew leader, was also very professional, pleasant to work with and very responsive to the needs of his workers, the project and my requests. The entire crew was just as professional and pleasant to work with. Each day, they came promptly, set up, polite to each other, my family and home, worked efficiently and professionally, then cleaned up each evening before leaving. The entire staff of VKB Kitchen and Bath were amazing to work with. But even more to the point, their workmanship was top notch. Every detail was taken care of from paint matching, molding work, drywall and finish work, material setting, care of materials and the finished project turned out better than I had expected. I've worked with many contractors over the years. I recommend few to others and do not write reviews for most. That is not the case with VKB Kitchen and Bath. I recommend them for any kitchen and bath job you may need done for your home. From the moment you step in to work with the designers to the final completion certification, you will find that the staff and crew are nothing short of excellent. (Photos attached. I am not a professional photographer. Any lack of quality (including reflection in the glass) is from the photographer, not the new bathrooms!)"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

When choosing a drywall anchor, consider the weight of the object you're hanging and how much weight the anchor will need to support. The heavier the weight, the stronger the anchor you'll need. You’ll find the weight capacity on the packaging when shopping for anchors.

Also, remember that you can use more than one anchor when hanging something on the wall. If you're using multiple anchors, divide the object weight by the number of anchors to determine how much each will need to support. If you need help deciding which drywall anchor to use, you can hire a handyperson to hang your objects.

A-frame homes are on the smaller side. While there’s no set square footage amount it has to be, it will usually come in around 1,000 square feet or smaller.

While some highly experienced homeowners can frame a house independently, it is not advisable. You will need ample carpentry experience, a team of helpers, and professionals to sign off on your work to meet local building codes. For the safest outcome, we recommend buying or building a house with the guidance of professionals.
