"I was so impressed with Wilber and his employees that in addition to painting our deck, I also hired him to pressure wash our deck and fence, replace the lattice on our pergola, as well as perform some other minor wood work. His responsiveness, quality of work and price were all excellent and would be hard to match. I have already referred him to several others in our neighborhood and look forward to hiring him again in the future!"

"Manor works recently stained the exterior of my house, in addition to some minor wood rot repair and replacement. Alfredo and his crew took the utmost care in every detail of their work, going above and beyond expectation. For example, my house is 38 yrs old, and has been stained many times before and after we purchased it. Never in those 38 yrs has it ever been stained underneath the gutter downspouts. It is now! They took great care of protecting all the windows/doors/stone foundation/light fixtures from paint overspray. Last year Manor Works also stained several decks on our house, and again the job was done to perfection. I highly recommend them for any painting needs you may have."

"Very messy painters, seemed like someone who was taken off the street to paint. Paint splatters on floors. Painted deck, do not believe they used the amount of the pre paint solution I had bought and did not do two coats, I bought 2 gallons of deck paint from sherwin williams and they didnt even use one whole gallon, did not paint one of the deck post that was in the ground. Paint didnt even last through one summer, told owner and said he would be back in late spring (2016) to remain the deck, never saw them again."

"The crew was very professional. My complaint is with the quality of the paint. Less than six months after the job, the paint scratches off the cabinets. I think they should have sanded cabinets instead of simply painting over existing oil, grease, and lacquer."

Customers say: Quick response

"Jeff met with me several times and made sure of every detail before starting the job. He and his dad and crew were great! They went above and beyond my expectations. They were able to start the job early and finished exactly when he said they would. They painted our house, garage, storage shed, stained the fence and deck. Terrific job! Many thanks!"

"Juan was extremely professional from start to finish. He knew exactly what my weathered and tired outdoor porch/deck needed in terms of power washing, stain and paint. I am very pleased with his work. He was flexible with scheduling, took care of getting all supplies, and his crew worked quickly and expertly in staining and painting my outdoor porch/deck. They cleaned up after themselves, and left everything the way they found it (hoses, furniture, etc.). Juan was also willing to work with me on pricing for the job, which I greatly appreciated!"

"Five Star Painting of Loudoun - Not Only Painting! They have now completed several jobs at our home. The last was replacement and repair of our deck surfaces, plus staining. We were so happy to discover that they do this, since most companies want to build you a new deck. We then had them also stain our fence. So far, they've painted the exterior of our house - a great job, on time, exactly what we requested, with attention to detail, and a walk-through at the end to be sure we were satisfied. When we needed interior painting, we didn't even get quotes, we just went straight to them. Again, superior job, even to repair of drywall. We still have another interior job to complete. They have competitive quotes, and responsive, professional team members who do careful, exacting work. This is a company you can trust to do your painting and (basic) carpentry anytime!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

You should seal your deck every one to two years, but you’ll also need to clean and repair your wood deck throughout the seasons. You may want to hire a local house cleaning service to sweep and clean the deck thoroughly. These cleaning services cost around $50 per hour.

Inspect your deck at least once a year, and if you notice any damage or rot, expect to spend about $10 to $50 for simple DIY fixes or about $2,000 for professional repairs on more extensive damage.

Painted decks typically require a new coat about once every ten years. In between new coats, it's best to maintain your deck by regularly removing debris, washing it down with non-abrasive cleaners, and staying ahead of structural issues, such as loose boards and rotting wood. In some cases, painting a small section of your deck affected by damage or the sun can lower your costs and workload.

Staining pressure-treated wood is a recommended practice. While inherently resilient, it's not impervious to moisture and UV exposure. Staining treated wood is feasible and recommended for enhanced protection and longevity. Applying stain and sealant safeguards against degradation, prolonging its life span. These measures shield the wood from environmental threats while augmenting its aesthetic appeal, ensuring your investment endures the test of time.

Yes, you must thoroughly clean your deck before staining. If you don't, dirt, debris, grease, and mildew can get trapped between the wood and the new stain. This not only looks unsightly but also prevents the stain from penetrating the wood properly, reducing its ability to protect the deck from weather and UV rays. As a result, the stain won't last as long or look as good. Any existing mold or mildew left untreated can continue to grow beneath the new stain, potentially leading to wood rot and structural damage. Always wait at least 48 hours after cleaning for the wood to dry completely before applying stain.

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.
