"My daughter had a great experience with American Mechanical when they installed a Tankless Water Heater. So I called when I needed help figuring out a leak under my kitchen sink. Ed was the plumbing expert that figured out the problem. He provided me with an estimate and answered all my questions. I will use this company to fix this problem and any future plumbing projects I have. Great customer service"

"Having never used gas heat before and just purchasing an older home I wanted to make sure it was in good operating condition and to learn a bit more about how the system worked. Technician took his time to help me understand the system. Provided what I feel was honest information and was very helpful without pushing replacement of what we all knew is a very old system. He made me feel confident the system was in good working condition and performed a very detailed inspection even with an annoying customer standing over him the entire time. Great job

"After calling to explain the problem, was told to turn the system off with the possibility that someone might come out the same day. They called back shortly to set up an appointment for service at an agreeable time the next day (within 24 hours). The two men arrived on time and checked the equipment. They found the likely cause of the problem, were very pleasant, informative, and professional. We plan to set up a seasonal maintenance program with this same company for two independent heating/cooling units in our home.

"Installer came unprepared to to fix fire caulk he damaged as well as not having a lift device to get the water heater onto it's stand. Had to go buy fire caulk at my expense and find a board for him to slide new water heater up to get it on the heater stand."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

Electric water heaters do not need an attached vent, but the location of the water heater should allow for roughly 12 inches of clearance around it. This allows cool air to flow around the appliance and allows repair technicians to work on its components safely. The exact amount of clearance space required depends on your local building codes.

Not all types of water heaters require a venting system. Electric tankless water heaters don’t use natural or propane gas, so no venting is required. Instead, they use electric burners to heat water quickly and efficiently. However, any system that does use gas or propane will require ventilation.

If you want instant hot water and to reduce water waste while improving convenience, a hot water recirculating system is worth it, especially if you find your hot water heater is not hot enough. These systems can save thousands of gallons of water each year so you don't have to wait for hot water at faucets and showers. The upfront investment can be high, especially for systems requiring additional plumbing, but the long-term savings on water bills and added comfort make them a worthwhile upgrade.

Every type of water heater has its advantages and disadvantages. Understanding those can help you decide the best type for your situation and budget.

Pros

  • Safer than gas or propane

  • Doesn’t require extensive venting systems

  • Lower upfront costs

  • Simpler to operate

  • No pilot light

  • Easier installation

  • More efficient heating than gas models

  • Available as point-of-use (POU) and whole-house units

Cons

  • Slower to heat water

  • Longer recovery time

  • Possibly higher operating costs

  • Doesn’t work during a power outage

  • Costs can increase without a 240-volt connection

Choosing between an electric water heater vs. a gas water heater comes down to personal preference. Overall, electric heaters are more energy efficient than their gas competitors. They’re also quieter to operate, take up less room, and don’t come with a risk of gas leaks.

The downside is that electric water heaters cost more to operate than gas. They might also struggle to heat water fast enough for households that use large amounts of hot water. Lastly, a power outage could cause your electric water heater to stop working, whereas gas water heaters may still function.
