"I've been trying to find an expert in insulation for months to come out and tell me out to properly insulate around a removed chimney and Comfenergy was the expert I needed. Even though the insulation part of the job was too small for Comfenergy (wasn't above their minimum quote value) they were happy to give me their expert advice and I appreciate the time spent as I now know what to ask the roofing contractor to do in order to insulate this correctly. Thanks!"

"I had multiple estimates and Fifth Fuel was the most professional and reasonable. Josh came to my house, took pictures of my attic and explained the different choices of insulating the attic. He provided an estimate in writing the same evening. The installers arrived on time, sent me photos of the before and after. They left the house clean with no debris. The result is a huge improvement in the temperature between the upstairs and down. I couldn’t be happier with them! Outstanding!! Thank you!"

"Shane and his crew were awesome - removed a ton of old, nasty insulation from the attic of our investment property. Left everything spotless. Extremely competitive pricing. We will definitely use their services again."

"The folks at Earth Right are knowledgeable and all very friendly. I am very pleased with the solar panels they installed and they are definitely saving me money. I was very pleasantly surprised that the panels generate electricity even from indirect sunlight. My panels are on the southwest side of my house, but once the sun comes up in the morning in the east they immediately start generating power. The insulation Earth Right installed is also giving us consistent temperatures throughout our house which I am very pleased with."

Small jobs welcome

"Bill knows what he is doing and holds himself to high standards. We wanted to upgrade the attic, and when he left, we have insulation carefully and well placed and blanket over the access. I'm very satisfied. This attic is now really well insulated, he did a little caulking around the access stairs, came on time, got done a little more quickly than he had estimated, and everything nice and clean."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

You do not always need to remove old insulation before adding new. If the existing insulation is in good condition—not wet, physically damaged, moldy, or infested with pests—you can add new insulation directly on top of it for a compounding effect. You can also mix different types, such as adding blown-in insulation around existing fiberglass batts.

However, removal is recommended if the old insulation is compromised by water damage or pests. You should also remove it if you plan to install a different type of insulation, like switching from roll or batt insulation to spray foam. If the existing insulation is very old or damaged, you will likely get more benefit from removing it and starting fresh.

The lifespan of insulation depends on the material type. Fiberglass can last between 80 and 100 years, but it is important to start checking it around the 15-year mark. Spray foam has a lifespan of up to 100 years, and mineral wool can last up to 100 years. Cellulose, an eco-friendly option, has a lifespan of 20 to 30 years.

Exposed ductwork can sweat just like ductwork placed behind walls, sometimes even more so. Ductwork sweats—like a cold drink on a hot day—because of a temperature imbalance between the air in the duct and the air in the room. In a crawl space or wall, this temperature can equalize faster due to the small space but in lofts and open rooms, that wouldn’t happen as quickly. Many people insulate their ducts for this reason.

The life span of insulation is between 20 and 100 years. At that time, existing insulation can fall victim to gravity, resulting in compression, which reduces its insulating protection or R-value. If you can't simply add more insulation over the existing material, removing the old to increase the effectiveness of the new can reduce your energy bills and make the project worth the time and money investment.

The primary purpose of insulation is to maintain comfortable temperatures in a home, whether that’s cool air when it’s hot out, or warm air in winter, but that’s not all it can do. All options will also minimize heating and cooling needs, lowering both your carbon footprint and energy bills in turn. And some options, like rigid foam boards, even offer soundproofing benefits, too.
