"First of all, I contacted Rakim with short notice of an emergency job that needed to be done. The person I referred him to was in a dire strait situation ( there was no heat in the home) and the weather was frigid cold. He showed up on time, assessed the situation, and immediately took action and got the job done! He is honest, fair, and above all has a great personality and has a genuine concern for people. I recommend Rakim and his son for any job big or small because he will do what is best for the situation and not take advantage of you. He is also very knowledgeable about what he’s doing."

"They've been servicing our equipment for the last 8 or 10 years. They're fine, they're not cheap, they're no the greatest thing ever going. We go on an annual contract, we got two units. We use them begrudgingly. We know their management and it's very responsive. They're familiar with us and our units. They're fine, they're good. Richmond has two or three good HVAC people, these are one of them."

"James was wonderful to work with. He is able to come out in the evenings and also installed my new AC unit on a Saturday...all without an up charge. He is very professional, courteous, knowledgeable and trustworthy. His prices are very much below his competitors. His crew (Ronnie and Chris) are very nice and hard working. I would recommend this company to everyone!"

"We were having a tough time with our HVAC, I got quotes from different companies, but couldnâ t select any of them because the prices were too high and was taking weeks to install the new system. Total Comfort provided a decent solution to replace our AC and Propane furnace for a reasonable cost within 2 days. I highly recommend them!"

"Greg came out to just do a checkup on our 5.5 year old system that had never been looked at. He identified a faulty installation in our heat pump secondary heat, and we now have hot air coming out upstairs in the winter for the first time ever. We'd thought it was just an inefficient unit or bad design. Greg is professional, works with integrity, and his price is great! I highly recommend Element for all of your HVAC needs in the greater Richmond area!"

"I hired Tyler to come service my hvac system that had been acting up. After his initial inspection he showed me his findings and explained why it would be beneficial and more cost effective for me to install a new system than to try to fix what I had. Once we agreed he was prompt and efficient in installing my new system. Tyler also took time out of his busy schedule to answer every question I had I canâ t recommend him enough to anybody looking for an honest down to earth hvac company that will absolutely treat you like part of their family heâ s your man."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

While it is possible to add Freon to your AC unit yourself, it is not recommended. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) prohibits the handling of Freon without a license. Freon is a dangerous gas that can cause irreversible damage to your AC or yourself if not installed correctly. It is worthwhile to hire a professional to add Freon to your AC.

NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certification is not legally required for HVAC technicians in most areas, but hiring a professional with this certification is highly recommended. NATE-certified technicians demonstrated their expertise and proficiency in different types of HVAC systems, offering assurance of quality service. It's a voluntary certification, yet it indicates a commitment to professionalism and ongoing training. Choosing a NATE-certified technician often means you're working with someone who is up-to-date on industry standards and best practices, which can lead to better service, energy efficiency, and long-term cost savings.

There are many recognizable symptoms of AC compressor failure. They include loud banging noises, hot air being continually circulated in your home despite running the AC at full blast, uneven airflow and cooling, and electrical issues like constant surges due to the compressor working overtime. While some of these symptoms, like uneven cooling, can have other root causes, they are common indicators of compressor problems.

Yes, it’s important to turn off your AC sometimes to give it a break and prevent it from freezing up. If your AC runs all the time, your system’s parts will wear down quicker, which may mean that you need to replace it sooner. Plus, using your AC constantly uses more electricity and leads to higher energy bills.

Running an air conditioner with mold is not safe because it can spread harmful mold spores throughout your home. Exposure to these spores can trigger various health problems, including respiratory issues, allergies, coughing, wheezing, sneezing, itchy eyes, and a sore throat. It may also aggravate asthma in household members. Continued exposure can increase the risk of more serious illnesses like sinus infections, pneumonia, and bronchitis. If you suspect mold in your air conditioner, you should stop using the system until it has been properly cleaned to avoid health risks and further contamination.
