"The contractor promptly responded and was available next day. They arrived punctually and conducted the service within estimated time. They took care of cleanliness of the space in front of fireplace during the work, performed detailed inspection and sweep of the chimney, answered all my questions about the functionality of fireplace and chimney, and they provided a reasonable estimate of additional work that could be done. Highly professional and comfortable communication. Would definitely recommend and hire again."

"Ryan was professional, respectful and was promptly onetime to the appointment we set to fix the problems we had with our new gas fireplace which never worked well from the time we had built this house. Ryan quickly found the problem which was the air mixture valve and our fireplace worked great, he also made sure the logs were set properly and cleaned all the black soot that built up from the air valve being set incorrectly. Highly recommend Peak Flame."

"Robert called to let me know that he was running early and to see if it would be OK for him to come out to the house an hour earlier than he had scheduled. That was fine with me (and I appreciated his courteousness). When he arrived at the house, he performed the work quickly and efficiently and was a true pleasure to deal with. It was also nice to do business with the owner of the company. I will use him again and I will definitely refer him to others. These days, it's very hard to find contractors of his caliber. Grab them when you can!"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

You can build a fireplace on an existing house, but it’s much easier to construct a masonry fireplace when building a new house. To add to an existing house, you’ll need to build a chimney and ensure the foundation can support a true masonry fireplace. Alternatively, you can purchase a gas or electric fireplace insert, which isn’t as complicated to add to an existing structure.

While hardwoods are the best woods to burn, a few types of woods should be avoided when burning. Wood that has not had time to season, or “green wood,” should be avoided. The extra water in the wood makes it smoke horribly, which is not a quality you want. Additionally, it’s best to avoid any wood that is manufactured or has been treated, including coated or sealed wood, painted wood, or pressure-treated wood. These woods have chemicals that will be released into your air when burned and can cause health problems.

No, there are no ventless pellet stoves. Because pellet stoves burn wood pellets, they produce wood smoke—which contains carbon monoxide. This harmful substance needs to be vented out of your living area. That said, there are vent-free and ventless fireplaces that run on natural gas and propane. These offer the heating and ambiance of a fireplace without the need to vent thick and hazardous wood smoke.

There are several maintenance tips you should take to ensure your pellet stove's safety and proper maintenance. You should vacuum the ash pan every week to prevent overflowing and clean the stove and surrounding vents every three to four months. It’s also important to get a professional inspection every year and install a carbon monoxide detector close to your stove. Be sure to dispose of hot ashes in a closed metal container; store it outside, away from the house. Only use the pellets recommended by your stove's manufacturer, and follow any cleaning and maintenance instructions.

Most projects take 5-10 days, including foundation work, masonry, and finishing.
