"Chimney sweeper was very polite.  We had a bit of a mix up in that I'm new to Angie's List and didn't realize I was supposed to communicate with him via Angie's List, so I was waiting for him to phone me.  Once the misunderstanding was straightened out we set a time and day for the appointment.  Despite the brutal winter weather, and the distance he had to travel to Western Loudoun County in Northern Virginia, he showed up as scheduled and very efficiently cleaned the chimney flue.  He was prompt, thorough, and efficient.  I felt bad for him as he left in near-gale conditions outside, but it was great having a nice clean chimney that we could now use.

Chimney Sweep questions, answered by experts

Restoration involves assessing damage, cleaning, deodorizing, repairing structures, and replacing damaged items, following a detailed and systematic approach.

Challenges include ensuring structural safety, completing soot removal, meeting restoration codes, and effectively managing insurance claims.

It is generally not safe to live in a house with smoke damage, as even minor damage can pose long-term health hazards and structural risks. While it might seem safe temporarily depending on the severity, you should relocate if there is major damage or visible soot. Smoke smells and residue contain dangerous particulates and chemical compounds, including carcinogens, that are hazardous to breathe and can cause respiratory issues. These signs of damage are not always visible but can have dangerous short-term and long-term effects on your health, belongings, and your home's structural materials. You should not stay in the house until a trained professional from a smoke remediation or restoration company has assessed the damage and determined it is safe to return. Your insurance company may cover the cost of alternative housing while the professional work is completed.

As with any smoking appliance, a smoking oven is a concerning fire risk. It also negatively impacts your indoor air quality, which can put vulnerable people at risk of breathing problems. A dirty oven can catch fire if you don’t stay on top of regular maintenance, so remember to check your oven for signs that it’s time for a cleaning and remove buildup every three months to stay on the safe side.

Yes, mineral spirits are flammable and may spontaneously combust at temperatures of 200 degrees F or more. Storing them in well-ventilated spaces and disposing of them the proper way are the best ways to prevent mineral spirits or anything contaminated with them, like towels and rags, from going up in smoke.
