"Dreamscape Designers are amazing! We just had our front yard transformed into a beautifully landscaped oasis. They truly exceeded our very high expectations! Tom met with us and listened very carefully to our wishes and drew up an amazing plan. The work was completed on schedule, and we were in constant communication with the Dreamscape team. We had a large project, with old trees and shrubs removed and replaced with palm trees, cherry trees, assorted shrubs, grasses, perennials and annuals. In addition, we had our landscape rocks & mulch refreshed. The landscape crew was very professional and were a pleasure to have working at our home. We are so pleased with the results and highly recommend Dreamscape Designers for all of your landscape needs."

"Exceptional customer service and support in building a 16-foot by 20-foot pavilion for use by the community of Sleepy Lake. Workmanship was outstanding and despite the challenges of getting the necessary permits from the City of Suffolk they worked tirelessly to get the project done in time for the neighborhood’s annual fall picnic."

"The Marlowe crew did a beautiful job on our patio extension and fire pit. They stayed in touch with us on every detail and made sure that our expectations were met. We made a change or two after the project was underway and Jake and his crew were very accommodating. These guys showed up on time, were courteous and kept our yard as neat as possible while they were working. We will consider Marlowe’s We Care Company for future improvements to our home. Patios questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can build a sunroom addition to your home despite living in a cold climate. Make sure to use high-quality insulation and windows and to supplement with sufficient heating from your HVAC system. The windows in the sunroom allow enough natural light into the room to help heat it most times without having to use the furnace. Even a small electric fireplace can heat the sunroom well enough.

Several types of porches are available to meet your needs and style preferences. Some common porch types include:

  • Porticos are essentially a roof over a walkway leading to the home's front entrance.

  • Sunrooms are closed-in porches that are an extension of the house with glass or plastic panels that allow optimal sunlight.

  • Wraparound porches extend around the entire home, or at least the front and one side, and offer multiple entrances to the house.

  • Back porches are an extension of the home’s floor into the outdoors. These offer more protection and privacy than a deck.

A sunroom may count toward your home's total square footage or living space if it meets certain conditions, which can vary by local regulations. Generally, for a sunroom to be included, it must be fully enclosed, properly insulated, and equipped with electrical access and a heating and cooling (HVAC) system, similar to a four-season room. It should also meet the same construction standards as the rest of the house. Three-season sunrooms that function more like enclosed porches typically do not count toward the total square footage and are considered exterior living space.

In almost all cases, you will need permits if you plan on building a sunroom over your patio, but regulations and requirements will depend on your municipality. Permits to enclose your patio will usually cost between $300 and $1,000. Since navigating local building codes and zoning requirements is challenging—and the consequences of not following them can be extremely expensive—we strongly recommend hiring a sunroom builder to complete the work and pull the permits for you.

If you’re trying to decide between a sunroom and a screened-in porch, the right choice will depend on your priorities. A screened-in porch costs only a fraction of the price of a sunroom, but in exchange, it has much more limited use. A sunroom will add more value to your home, but at a much higher up-front cost and longer construction timeline.
