"I had an indoor stone fireplace needing some cosmetic work following a wall renovation we did. I contacted this professional via text message. Although he was out of the country, he responded to all my messages very quickly. We wanted the project completed before this professional would be returning, so we went with a different contractor, not found through HomeAdvisor, but someone we were referred to. I still appreciated Mr. Speters getting back to me and being willing to at least look at the project when he returned to Utah."

"I received phone call minutes after my request for a service . They set up appointment for the next day ! Logan arrived , cleaned my gas fireplace beautifully. He informed me of issues that might arise in the future and how they might be remedied. For now he just needed to clean the parts which is why it wasnâ t working correctly. He was knowledgeable and explained everything so well . I highly recommend , and price was very fair , too"

"As a businessman, I am extremely impressed with not only the work ethic of the owners, Bartholomew & Kathy, but also their integrity. On tow levels of our home, my wife and I have a free standing wood burning stove as well as a wood burning stove insert in our fireplace. The exterior of our home needed some masonry repairs, and that was taken care of as well. I highly recommend AB Richards professionals. Thank you for a job well done! Tom"

"He made a service call to check out the furnace. Because he thought we would be pleased with the price and service, he didn't,t charge us for this initial visit. However, because my brother runs a construction company, he was subsequently able to get us a deal from one of his subcontractor's: otherwise we would surely have used this contractor.

"My house is 90 years old, and after recenly buying it and remodeling it, I needed some input on my fireplaces.  These guys came out and gave a great and thorough inspection so I know where to go next.  Unfortunately I have to save up to make some more repairs, but if I had started to use the fire places as-is, I could have had a dangerous situation, OR a lot of black smoke in my house!

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

You can, but you shouldn’t. While you can still start a fire in your fireplace, the smoke and other fumes won’t have a proper way to escape if the flue is cracked. By continuing to operate your fireplace, wood stove, or furnace, you are putting your home at risk of absorbing toxic byproducts of the fire source.

To reset an electric fireplace, first shut the unit off using the control panel or remote control. Make sure the unit is entirely shut down, then unplug it from the power outlet. Wait five to 10 minutes, then plug the fireplace back in and turn it on. This process should reset the electric fireplace. After resetting, make sure to set the thermostat, timer, and other programmable settings to suit your preferences.

Wood is classified as either hardwood or softwood. For firewood, hardwoods are generally the best choice as they tend to burn longer, hotter, and produce less smoke than softwoods. Recommended hardwoods include oak, hickory, maple, cherry, ash, beech, birch, elm, and walnut. Oak is a particularly good option as it's widely available, slow-burning, and doesn't produce much smoke or sparks. Some woods, like oak, hickory, and cherry, also emit a pleasant scent. It is best to avoid softwoods such as eucalyptus, poplar, and willow, as they create a lot of smoke and have a high moisture content that makes them difficult to light and burn efficiently.

Pellet stoves are safer than wood stoves in many ways. They don’t produce as many creosote deposits as wood stoves do, they create less smoke, and the flames are contained, decreasing the risk of any sparks or embers creating a house fire. Pellet stoves also burn more cleanly and efficiently than wood stoves do.

The most common sign of a carbon monoxide leak is the visible black soot marks on the walls near your wood stove. An excess accumulation of smoke in other rooms of your home could also indicate that your wood burning stove is leaking carbon monoxide. If you notice either of these signs or are still unsure, it’s best to leave the premises and contact your fire department to check your home’s levels.
