"Saved us a ton of money...I signed up with another more pushy company after their scare tactics for a $15,000 2 unit (central AC and furnaces) system...was advised by my parents to have Grants give me a second opinion before I do anything as they had used them for years and they were always very honest.  So I did, and they told me there was no reason to replace anything, and some simple maintenance could be done and save me a boatload of money.  They did the work and alas, I have no issues at all!  Great service, very trustworthy.

"Not only is David highly skilled in resolving HVAC issues, but he was a pleasure to work with and taught me a lot! He was punctual, communicative and patient, taking the time to explain what the issues were (in plain English), and in the end solved my A/C problems much faster AND cheaper than the so called “best in town” HVAC company I was working with. Highly recommend, and will be calling him back again!"

"The repairman called to let us know he was on his way and the approximate time he would arrive. He took his time explaining a possible problem he found with one furnace and showed/discussed the part that would be responsible. (He removed the same part from each furnace to compare and we were able to see what he was talking about). The repairman appeared quite knowledgeable and asked us if we had any questions throughout the visit. He was very courteous."

"Jacob knows attic work and his team did a good job cleaning the air vents of my 2-HVAC unit home for $199. Jacob also quoted an additional $5k of work related to ducts, insulation and attic temperature. Jacob is a good salesman, but a few of those things were exaggerated, plus explanation of the building dust from 1999 trapped in the HVAC is not correct."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

In most cases, you should hire a professional to carry out services on your HVAC system, as the components are complicated, expensive, and potentially dangerous to work with. However, there are a few things you can do on your own to keep your HVAC system in good condition, including changing your filters every three months, keeping the area around your outdoor condenser clear of debris and plant growth, making sure your or intakes aren’t blocked, and keeping an eye out for increased energy bills, strange noises, and unusual odors related to your equipment.

If your AC condenser is nearing the end of its life, it might leak fluid or make loud or unusual sounds (like grinding or hissing). You might also notice that it isn’t heating your home as evenly or effectively as it once did. Also, an aging condenser will have to work harder to cool your home, which may force it to use more power and drive up your utility bills.

To diagnose a bad HVAC or AC damper, assess the airflow from your vents. For a manual damper, close it, run your system, and check for airflow. If air is still coming through the vents, the damper is likely faulty and needs repair or replacement. For an automatic damper, turn on your HVAC system and monitor the airflow and room temperature. Signs of a problem include low airflow, a room that won't maintain its set temperature, or a drafty feeling. If you suspect a faulty automatic damper, you may need to hire a professional for repairs.

You will only need to refill your AC with refrigerant if it has a leak. Otherwise, a modern, well-maintained AC will most likely never need a recharge. You may notice a leak in an older system if your bills are higher, you hear a hissing sound, or if the air is blowing out hot.

When your HVAC technician mentions recharging your home AC unit, they’re referring to the process of topping off the unit with refrigerant, so the levels are properly maintained and pressurized. Normally, a properly functioning AC unit doesn’t need additional refrigerant, but AC units can develop leaks or other problems that decrease the amount of refrigerant needed.
