"Of all the contractors that worked hard to remodel my kitchen, Mr. Jose Lopez of High Quality Sheetrock Repair, was my favorite. After the old counter-top and old back-splash tile was removed, Mr. Lopez removed the damaged drywall and replaced it. He carefully cut around the electrical receptacles and the plumbing supply lines to avoid leaving large gaps. He made sure that the drywall was straight so that the new counter-top will lay flush against the wall. He aligned the seams to provide a smooth surface on which to install the new tile back-splash. When told that the new tile may be glass tile, he returned with paint and painted the new drywall white to ensure consistent coloration of the translucent tile. He charged no extra fees for the painting work. The beautifully laid and finished kitchen counter-top and back-splash tile are a testament to Mr. Lopez's forethought, conscientious attitude and careful attention to detail."

"This is an update from a previously submitted review.  We used the contractor before to update our kitchen countertops in 2010.  He did a good job and was called again for this Master Bath renovation.  The overall project came out well mainly because I picked my own fixtures, colors, etc., but it was not without its issues.

First, I think the demo could have been closer to the actual start date.  We were without a bath for 2 weeks because that was the time between demo and actually starting work.  The workers sometimes used our personal tools (i.e., ladder, towels, push broom) and they really should have used their own.  I ended up locking some things up and my husband said he still can't find his push broom.

This was my 1st reno so I wasn't aware some items (fixtures) were not typically included.  But, after writing a 10K downpayment check, I was asked to go buy paint!  I think paint could have been purchased with $10,000!  The tile installer messed up the pattern I asked them to do and it could not be re-done because the tile was from AU and we had  a limited quantity.  There was no mention of a price reduction because of this major mistake, and the general contractor just seemed to ignore the fact that it was screwed up.  I cringe a little every time I see it from the shower.

Also, the reno was needed because there was a leak that damaged a door, drywall, and door frame in the wet closet/toilet room.  The contractor didn't want to replace this and said it wasn't included in the quote! This was the main reason for the reno and the 1st thing I showed him when viewing the job!!  Another worker pointed out that the door was warped and wouldn't close, so it finally got done.  The drywall wasn't replaced, but I didn't make a fuss because I don't think they could've matched the texture if they replaced it anyway. My husband also seems to think the insulation was not replaced and should have been.

Lastly, the contractor wanted to put niches in the shower and because of the piping, that was not an option.  The niches were supposed to be returned within 30 days minus a 25% restocking fee.  Needless to say this was never deducted from my invoice or returned!  They're sitting in my garage and cost approx. $200.  I have tried to communicate my concerns with the contractor via text and email, but it's been about 10 days and he hasn't responded, so I decided to use the power of the review.

The 1 good thing was that the custom cabinets were awesome,!  I found a picture on Houzz and they were replicated beautifully!  But, when speaking with others, the contractor may have grossly overcharged me for these.  In short, I feel I was overcharged at least 2-3K and was "nickeled and dimed" on several item lines.  In the future, I think I will use individual subcontractors for a job.  I also would not hire this company again and am disappointed that they did not address my concerns."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Although they are used for similar tasks, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum and is primarily used for large-scale projects like taping and finishing seams on new drywall. Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it a thicker compound best suited for small wall repairs like filling nail holes or cracks, as it dries quickly and is easy to sand. For small repairs, either product can be suitable. However, you can use joint compound for small jobs in place of spackle, but you cannot use spackle for large-scale taping and mudding projects.

Plastering lasts for around 15 to 20 years without needing repairs or maintenance in most cases, and with proper upkeep, plastering can last a lifetime—sometimes more than 100 years. Plaster repair costs between $1 and $3 per square foot, and you may need these services once every 15 to 20 years or so unless you have a harsh climate where humidity changes are a constant issue. You can also opt to skim-coat plaster for between $0.90 and $1.30 per square foot, which may serve you better in the long run.

You can repair plaster ceilings yourself after the cause of the ceiling damage has been addressed. However, the repair can easily take 5 hours and can be slightly challenging for those without previous experience. If you do decide to flex your DIY muscle, have a helper to help hold the ladder and pass you the tools for safety purposes.

While certain types of textured walls can seem dated (looking at you, popcorn), textured walls are a common sight in both older and more modern homes. The main reason textured walls may be here to stay is that they are an excellent way to hide minor imperfections on a wall and give it a finished appearance. Some homeowners think a coat of paint on drywall is a bit industrial-looking. However, that look works perfectly in modern home design

Plaster walls typically last between 30 and 70 years, but depending on the quality of the materials and the moisture levels in the building, they can last for over 100 years. With expert application and consistent maintenance, plaster can even last for centuries. To extend its lifespan, it is important to have the plaster professionally installed, address any water damage promptly, and repair small cracks as they appear. Regular inspections by a professional can help identify and address concerning cracks before they become significant issues.
