Small jobs welcome

"Due to their backlog, it took longer than I would have wanted, but when the appointment commitment was made, it was met exactly. The assessment of the problem was quick and there was no "padding" of the bill. The cost was very fair, and so far, the repair appears to be working well. THANK YOU Airline Vacuum..."

I am a general Handyman with a current EPA Universal Certification, which means that I am licensed to handle any and all refrigerants that are currently available. I am also a Journeyman Mason, handling all aspects of masonry. I am also very familiar with installing/running new wires for cable tv, as well as internet jacks, excluding fiber optic cable. Electricity and plumbing are another set of skills that I have, but I am not licensed in Texas to do anything requiring a permit in those fields. English and Spanish are my languages, with a preference for English.

"One of the ladies worked so hard and really made her way through the house, but the other seemed to take her time.  It took her several hours just to clean two bathrooms and my bathrooms aren't big or that dirty.  One of them is actually a guest bath that rarely gets used.  Overall, I still felt the special price I paid was worth the money, but if I was paying full price for the service I would have been a little disappointed in the lack of initiative taken by the one cleaner.  Both ladies were very nice and careful inside my home.

Central Vacuum Cleaners questions, answered by experts

No. Only the hose or the attachments are portable in a central vacuum system. A portable vacuum is a standalone model like a stick, canister, or upright. A central vacuum system is defined by a central power unit, which is installed in one place like an AC unit, and the connected network of piping to funnel the suction.

Experienced professionals don’t usually need to take down drywall to install the central vacuum. They are experienced in working in the tight spaces between walls and in crawl spaces to minimize any damage. The only drywall changes should be the holes cut for the new outlets. However, home design, existing plumbing, and other factors may require some modification. An estimate from a professional contractor should include information if any changes need to be made.

Before deciding whether or not to install a central vacuum system, consider the pros and cons to determine if it’s right for you.

Pros

  • Increased suction power

  • Improved air quality

  • Reduced noise pollution

  • Longer lifespan than traditional self-contained vacuum units

Cons

  • Higher upfront installation costs

  • Expensive repairs

  • Requires significant storage space

Technically, yes, you could install a central vacuum system on your own, but it is a very difficult DIY. There is a significant amount of planning, cutting into walls, and electrical wiring work that goes into it, which should only be performed by a professional. Because of the difficulty and expense associated with a central vacuum system, it’s worth it to hire a professional company familiar with the installation's complexities.

For the average-size house, a central vacuum installation usually takes one day of work by a team of professionals. Large houses may take two or more days. But if you are planning on a DIY project, it’s likely to take much longer. We suggest getting a few estimates for a project this big and fully understanding all the requirements before you make a decision about installation. Certain parts of your house may not be usable during the installation, and you may want to make other plans.
