"I recently hired Pinckard for a landscaping project at my home, and I couldn't be more impressed with the results. From start to finish, the entire process was seamless and professional. Lon and Sandy created a great plan within our budget. The team arrived on time. Their attention to detail was second to none—every plant, stone, and piece of mulch was placed with precision. You can tell they take real pride in their work. The quality of the materials they used was top-notch, and the finished product exceeded my expectations. My yard has gone from being somewhat neglected to a stunning, well-manicured oasis. They even cleaned up thoroughly after the job, leaving the space looking better than I could have imagined. I highly recommend Pinckard Landscaping for any landscaping needs—if you want high-quality work with attention to every detail, these are the folks to call. I’ll definitely be using them again in the future!"

Customers say: Quality work

"They were very helpful. They are a great company. They advise people to go to a certain landscape plan because of water shortages. They also believe in using plants that are native to this area. They really do a good job. I kept their card and information to use in the future, because I like their approach. They were very good about coming out right away. They were very professional and did not try to talk me into anything. They just answered my questions and told me what I had asked them about, as far as information. They were not pushy. They let me make the decision."

Lighting questions, answered by experts

Your maintenance needs revolve around the type of foundation you choose, as well as how you furnish or decorate it. Patios require little else other than the occasional hose-down, but decks and other wooden structures will require annual power washing and sealing. You may also need to restain the wood every two to three years.

Adding a solid roof rather than building a pergola or leaving the space open will make maintenance much easier. Without a roof, you will need to spend more time sweeping, washing, and covering your furniture to protect it from UV bleaching.

The five common types of landscape lighting are up-lighting, down-lighting, spotlights, built-in lighting, and pathway lighting.

  • Up-lighting casts light upwards from the ground, mostly for aesthetic purposes.

  • Down-lighting directs light onto the ground, lighting pathways, or outdoor space.

  • Spotlights cast direct, focused lighting in any direction.

  • Built-in lighting integrates lighting into an outdoor feature.

  • Pathway lighting illuminates walkways, increasing safety.

Cold weather can cause older incandescent Christmas lights to fail by causing cracks in the finish or the glass itself. Modern LED lights are affected in the opposite way and perform even better as the temperature drops.

Pool lights are designed to be safe by protecting swimmers from electrocution. These lights are made with waterproof fixtures and seals to prevent contact with the water.

Electrocution from pool lights is still possible, but rare. Faulty wiring or broken lighting equipment can make lights unsafe, so it’s important to replace lights as needed and have an electrician inspect and upgrade the wiring.

High-quality landscape lights that are hardwired and properly maintained can last for 10 to 25 years or more. You’ll usually get a longer lifespan from soffit lights and wall-mounted lights that aren’t directly exposed to the elements or prone to damage from foot traffic or vehicle traffic. Solar-powered and battery-powered lights often won’t last as long, but you can still expect a lifespan of five to 15 years.
