"Got a much needed upgrade to my kitchen backsplash. Joseluis came in and assessed the job and made recommendations on how the backsplash could be done and how a portion of the granite could be removed to show more of the backsplash for a better look. He was right. Great crew! Finished the work timely and followed up to make sure everything was to my liking. I appreciate that my phone calls were always returned promptly and any questions I had were addressed right away. Would hire again and recommend them to anyone needing a backsplash."

"Tony and his team did an outstanding job on our outdoor kitchen...we are very pleased! We shared with Tony how we envisioned the layout. He provided a few invaluable suggestions to help increase countertop surface space and overall appeal. The extra countertop space has already proven to be a great idea! Our kitchen has granite countertops, granite wrapped backsplash, 4-in nicotine stone accented with bricks to match our home, and granite wrapped appliance spaces for a ceramic grill, 4-burner gas grill, power burner, and a drop-in icebox that doubles as a sink. We received quotes from several contractors, all of which used cinder block to build their kitchens. Tony uses steel framing for his kitchens which allow for maximum storage space beneath the kitchen. Everyday we look out at our patio and we can't believe that beautiful kitchen out there is ours!!! Thanks Texas Outdoor Escapes!"

"Daryl Clark did an excellent job on my home. I had purchased a special from Angie's List for $149.00. When Daryl called me to set up the cleaning, I told him I really wanted my discolored brick to be pressure washed and just needed a small area of Hardie plank above the front door done as it had turned a bit greenish from all the rain. He arrived on time and we did a walk around where I showed him the areas I had talked about with him on the phone. I told him I was concerned about my chimney, brick pillars, and other spots of brick that looked moldy and black. Daryl was very honest and told me that he couldn't perform a miracle, but he would do his very best to make the brick look better. I also asked him how much it would be to pressure wash my driveway, sidewalks in front of my home, the walkway up to the front door, and a small patch on my tile patio that had turned black. He told me it would be an additional $129.00, so I said okay. All I can say is WOW !!!! Daryl did a fantastic job on everything. He wasn't kidding when he said he'd do his very best to get those troublesome brick areas clean. I was simply amazed at how well it all turned out. My home looks beautiful now and I cannot wait to put in new landscaping. Before he left, he also told me how to keep mold away from the brick so it would continue to look nice. I've had my house pressure washed a few times over the years, but nobody ever came close to making my home look this good. I give this service an A+ rating."

"When I requested a quote on Angie's list, I had a response from Jesse in 20 minutes (on a SUNDAY). Once I scheduled the work, Manny and Christian showed up on time and walked me through the process. They resurfaced my tub from dull beige to sparkling white, cleaned up and were gone within 4 hours. They were efficient, nice and respectful. We were so impressed with the service, we have scheduled A Star to paint our kitchen and bath cabinets and install our kitchen backsplash later this month."

Small jobs welcome

"The contractors that performed the actual work did a good job although they left long scratches down my wall from installing the granite. After I hired them, customer service and planning was difficult. No expectations or explanations of what would happen. The granite install team did not have anyone who spoke English well so we could not communicate at a reasonable level. The person organizing my installation took hours to reply, had me buy double the amount of tile needed, scheduled things without telling me when I was not home, and the office cannot seem to coordinate a simple phone call to take payment, which ended up $300 more than the quote because the person who did the quote did not listen to what I said. Horrible communication. Overall I am pleased with the work but save yourself the headache."

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

If you’re looking for a durable tile for a shower floor, consider porcelain, stone, or vinyl tiles. Each of these options, when installed correctly, will stand up well to everything from water and moisture to the impact from a dropped bottle of body wash. These materials are also easy to clean and maintain, making them popular options for shower floors.

Add a T-shaped spacer to each corner of a tile when placing it. You’ll want to nudge the tiles closer together so the spacers are touching each corner. When you’re done installing your tile, you can remove each spacer, wash them, and use them for your next project.

You can let the tile sit without grout. Don’t panic if there’s a delay between installing the tiles and grouting. A substantial stoppage isn't a problem, provided you keep the tile surface clear of dust and debris. Also, avoid walking over less stable ungrouted floor tiles as they are more prone to premature cracking and shifting.

Yes, unfortunately, it is normal for wall and floor tiles to crack, especially when you drop heavy items on tiled floors or place heavy objects on them. Tiles are also more susceptible to cracking when ceramic tiles designed for walls are installed on floors, as these are often not strong enough to handle heavy loads from foot traffic and furniture. Similarly, tiles that are installed incorrectly, lack adequate subflooring, or have other installation problems are prone to cracking. To avoid these problems and the inevitable repair and replacement costs they bring, always hire a professional for tile work and follow best practices for installation.

For best results, you should remove the toilet in a bathroom before removing tile or installing new tile. If you don’t remove the toilet, it will be harder to fully waterproof the tile around the toilet, which could increase the risk of mold growth or plumbing leaks. If you have trouble removing the toilet, hire a plumber to help.
