"We installed the water softener and reverse osmosis over a month ago. The quality of water is fantastic! Friends and guests commented on how good the water taste. It’s also noticeable on skin, hair, and fabrics: so soft!! We had a small problem with water pressure in the reverse osmosis spout. The technician came out immediately and came back a second time to fix the problem to our satisfaction. Today we are expecting the quality control visit. The filtration system has not had a noticeable effect on our water bill. We are very pleased and highly recommend it!"

More importantly, our plumbers are as courteous as they are highly trained, making our service the most stress-free experience you'll ever have with a plumber.

"Mr. Rooter unethically dishonest the technician michael and his assistant had come to repair the main valve as well as a leakage due to a faulty toilet pump. the toilet pump valve needed to be replaced. michael asked me if they could come back after the part (under warranty) had arrived. we told them that our contractor could do the replacement. michael told me that the replacement part had been ordered. I was a bit surprised as of how quick the part was ordered (within a few minutes), but thought maybe he had inside connections to do that much quicker than I could. after waiting for almost 4 weeks, the part never came. I contacted customer service via email. sharon responded and told me that michael had ordered the part again. it would be delivered to their office, and they asked me again if they could come out for installation. I told them that wouldn’t be needed as our contractor would be doing that. I asked them to let me know when the part had arrived, so that our contractor could go to their office to pick it up. after waiting for 3 weeks, the part still never came. I contacted sharon again. she said that the order had been shipped to our house. what? they told me earlier that it had been ordered and would be shipped to their office. now it had been shipped to our house? notice how the story had changed? sharon’s last email to me was on may 15th. I had contacted her twice (on may 18th and may 22nd) asking for the part number so that I could contact the manufacturer. we had to figure out the part number (which was the main reason why we contacted Mr. Rooter’s customer service in the first place), and contacted the manufacturer. they said that they never got any request to send a replacement part to our home address. it was when I realized that michael had never ordered the part in the first place. it is because we had declined for them to come back again for the installation, thus no reason for them to order the part. we are beyond disgusted that we had to wait more than 2 months for a part that never came. and with their empty promises of having ordered the part. to us, that was unethically dishonest (because we had declined their offer to come over to do the part replacement). they could have given us the part number and asked us to make an order ourselves instead of waiting for nothing."

Our charge is $45 per hour for Tech and $20 for helper. Will travel. Two men at least on the job to complete the task quicker. Most jobs we like to bid so you have a clear idea at the start what your cost is. On occasion by the hour is necessary on projects that have a lot of unknowns. Payment is 50% up front and 50% at completion in most cases. All material money in advance or you supply all material to be on site at the beginning of the job. Communication is the most important aspect of this business. We pride ourselves in this. We do not start your project until our schedule permits. Most of the time we are booked as far as 3 months in advance, but normally we prefer 2 weeks in advance bookings. Most of our clients become life long friends. And above all else, we understand you are our bread and butter, who deserves respect and the feeling that you got your moneys worth. Looking forward to working with you. We are a small family owned and operated business serving the Pearland and greater Houston area since 1980. We offer fast, friendly, and honest service at a fair price. Our motto has always been, "If we can't fix it...nobody can." Give us a shot to earn your business! AL

"I can't say enough good things about Al's Plumbing Company. They're a local, family-owned company with fair pricing, integrity, reliability and expertise. What started out as a wet sidewalk quickly escalated to a rising mound in my yard and my M.U.D. district having to shut the water to my house due to a leak in the main water pipe to my house. After an exhausting search of big and small plumbing companies and getting price quotes ranging from $1,500 - $7,000 to replace the entire main water pipe (which everyone seemed set to do) I settled with Al's Plumbing Company. I liked the way they explained what my potential problem could be, and they offered a reasonable price quote right off the bat. They were also skeptical that it was the entire main water pipe going bad and suspected that the problem was only at the connection where the water was pooling. Even though it was a weekend and there was a threat of a tropical storm hitting the area the very next day, they made me a priority job since we had no water service available to the house. They showed up early this morning, did some digging, and found my problem. Not only did they not have to replace the entire main water line as some other companies were telling me, they found that the installer of my sprinkler system (from 8 years ago) actually cut the adapter piece (to the main water line) a little short, causing the already precarious connection to eventually loosen and blow off, causing my current situation. They replaced the faulty adapter with a new one, tested the water line again and verified that there were no more leaks. These days, it's very hard to find a reliable company to do house work/repairs. Al's Plumbing Company provides honest, efficient work. They are very thorough with their explanations and will not oversell you like some other companies. Both Al and his guys were a pleasure to work with, and I'm glad to say that I have a reliable, local plumbing company I can now keep in my back pocket for any work I need done and would not hesitate to recommend them to others. Thanks Al and team!"

FAQs for water softener service projects in Houston, TX

The license requirements for water softener installation depend on your location. Some municipalities require that the installer hold a plumbing license, some require a permit and an inspection, but no license for the installer, and some require a permit and a license for the installer. Regardless of the local laws in your area, it’s always a good idea to hire a licensed plumber or installer. These pros will install your system properly and have the experience to size the system appropriately. Use Angi’s state licensing tool to check your installer’s license status.

Water softeners are worth the money if you live in an area with hard water. Hard water is safe to drink, but it poses serious threats to your plumbing system. The minerals in hard water will gradually build up on the inside walls of your pipes, reducing water flow to your fixtures. The minerals can also gradually corrode your plumbing system, reduce its lifespan, and increase the risk of leaks. Hard water also makes soap and detergent less effective. Water softener systems can solve all these issues, making them a great investment.

It’s possible to install a water softener yourself, but we don’t recommend it. Water softeners require working with copper pipes and electrical wiring, neither are suitable tasks for most DIYers. Plus, working with water and electricity together is dangerous and could pose a risk to your safety. Water softeners also need to be calibrated so that they don’t make your water too soft, as soft water poses just as many risks as hard water. Overall, it’s well worth hiring a local water softener installer to place your water softener system.

The cost to install a water softener system is $1,500 on average, ranging between $200 and $6,000. The labor for water softener work typically costs between $150 and $1,000, so you can add that to your equipment costs to get an accurate total. Your price will depend on many factors, including the following:

  • System capacity

  • Home size

  • Water hardness levels

  • Type of water softener

  • Presence of electricity in the installation area

  • Local permit costs

Your water softener size is based on your total household water consumption. In most cases, you can assume the average household member will use around 75 gallons per day. Multiply that by the number of people in your home, then multiply by 10 (for the typical grains per gallon). You’ll get a number in grains that should help roughly size your water softener. However, it’s best to hire a professional to install your system and use more exact numbers, like your exact average water consumption per day and starting water hardness.
