"In the middle of August (106 deg.) when everyone was having busted water pipes… Texan Water came out and did a SUPERB job of getting the gushing water flow stopped. This was supposed to have been fixed by SAWS but after a couple of months of waiting for SAWS, I called Texan Water. They scheduled me in and within a week, sent out Noah who found a way to plug up an old fire hydrant. The best way to fix hard water in a shower is by installing a water softener system. This is the only way to truly ensure that hard water doesn't enter your shower—or any part of your home beyond the water softener. Most other methods are temporary fixes. While you can choose a shower filter, these filters aren’t as effective and may not remove many contaminants that cause limescale and hard water stains.

It’s not a good idea to oversize your water softener. Doing so will mean the tank doesn’t get full, which can lead to channeling. This leads to a large portion of the resin beads not being utilized and the beads at the bottom of the tank being overused. Over time, this will reduce the efficiency of your system, not to mention that the upfront cost of an oversized softener is unnecessarily high. If you have a timed regeneration cycle rather than a demand-based one, you’ll also spend far more on replacing salt than you need to.

Whether or not your water softener installation requires a permit depends on where you live; some municipalities only let certified plumbers and electricians pull the necessary permits and complete the work, others only require a professional to sign off on the work, and some don’t mandate permits at all. You can contact your local building department to find out, but you can also ask a local water softener installer or plumber to see if a permit is necessary. They will usually pull the permits for you and can help close them out after the work is complete.

There are several things that can shorten the life of a water softener. Homes with very hard water may have to replace the unit sooner because the water softener works harder to filter out the hard minerals. High water usage and infrequent maintenance can also put more strain on a water softener.

A tankless water heater should be at least 10 feet away from a water softener, although the pros you hire for water softener installation can help you determine the correct distance. These two units need to have some distance between them to prevent hot water from the tankless water heater from flowing backward into the water softener when it runs a regeneration cycle.
