"It was on Memorial Day > a holiday for most people and businesses. We noticed our toilets weren't flushing, and sewer gas smells were starting to occur in our bathrooms. So, we started calling local plumbers for estimate quotes, informing them of our issue. Most of them wanted to charge extra for "emergency" service and/or "holiday" service. Most quotes were very expensive. We then remembered a plumber we had used a few months back, via a contractor we were using to remodel a bathroom. He had re-plumbed the shower water lines and drain line for the new shower remodel. We were please with him then (his professionalism, price, etc.), so we thought we'd give him a try for this job. Toilet seats have two mounting brackets on the back that accept mounting bolts. The bolts drop through the brackets, through two small holes on the top of your toilet, and then receive nuts to hold them in place on the bottom of the toilet. If you can’t see the bolt heads, you might need to pry up the mounting bracket cover, which is a plastic piece that hides and protects the bolts.
Yes, you’ll need to replace your toilet’s wax seal any time you move the toilet. This is because movement of the toilet will break the seal, rendering the remaining wax useless. Thankfully, replacing a wax seal is fairly easy, and the seal itself only costs $2 to $10 at most home improvement stores.
When replacing a wax seal you typically also have to replace the closet bolts that secure the toilet to the flange. These are usually about 2.5" - 3" long and have to be cut once the toilet is secure. Cutting them usually makes them too short to reuse.
