The owner of Natures Haven Builders is a Journeyman Carpenter, He does both Framing and Finish Carpentry and has over 23 years professional experience in the building trades combined with over 11 years experience and job-site training in carpentry. Our end product is about precision and quality not about fast paced production. We will never pull the get in, get out, get paid routine that is seen so often preformed by so many sub-par service providers in the trades. We do quality work for good people that want a well-built home improvement project. We treat everyone's home as if it were our own and do everything we can to ensure the outcome of a project to be as the customer envisioned. We want everybody to love our work when a project is complete. We do our best to please the customer in every way we can, but no one can please everyone all the time. About 98% of the time we can do what a customer needs to fix a problem but only about 93% of the time or less can we do what is wanted due to factors like safety, ability to make a solid mechanical attachment, and ethical issues that Rick has that come from when people want a cover up and not a fix in order to make a property look like it is ready to be sold. "There are carpenters that know more about the trade than I do, but my work ethic, the pride I take in my work, and my attention to the details make my end product far superior to the work (completed !?) by most of my peers," Natures Haven's owner Rick Meyers. \n \nSERVICES PROVIDED OTHER THAN CARPENTRY Project Management (New Construction, Remodels, and Additions), Property Management (Rental and Resale Properties), Home Inspections, and Handy Services. Our specialties are in building, framing, door installations, finish carpentry, bathroom & kitchen remodels, room additions, floor plan changes that include stuffing beams into sub floor, ceiling, or roof frame work when removing load bearing interior and exterior partition walls. On doors our specialty is in both the installation and maintenance of exterior or interior doors. We do demolition and turnkey installations on almost all residential door units including all of the hardware and trim. We can install all types of door configurations including single or double door units, doors with side lights, doors with a transom, pocket, bypass, and bi fold doors. We prefer to install a pre-hung door unit over cutting up or taking a plainer to perfectly square slab door to make it fit into a previously installed doorjamb. Plus in most cases it is cheaper to pay for a door unit ($20 and up more than a slab door) + trim + labor for the installation. Sometimes it can cost hundreds of dollars in labor mortising for hinges and boring holes for the hardware when combined with custom fitting a door into an out of square doorjamb. It is also in some cases more cost effective to uninstall and re-install the door jamb + in some instances rebuild the door jamb to insure proper mechanical operation of the door unit . Our framing knowledge enables us to frame out the rough opening for any size door unit. Door maintenance includes adjustments of sticking or rubbing doors, adjusting non-latching or non-locking doors, replacing weather stripping, and replacing door sweeps. Because of problems making solid mechanical attachments that will result in the door jamb to no longer be constructed of four solid pieces making a structurally complete jamb unit solidly attached at all four corners. This combined with waterproofing, and weatherproofing issues we will not change and do not recommend changing the threshold or a jamb leg, without uninstalling then re-installing an exterior door unit especially a door fully exposed to the elements. I will never bondo or putty over the wood rot on an exterior door jamb. That is done by unskilled laborers, people that have no marketable skill to rely on, and people that could know better but are just stuck o sur...

Skylights questions, answered by experts

A skylight's ability to withstand hail depends on factors like material quality and thickness. Impact-resistant options, such as tempered or laminated glass, fare better against hail compared to standard glass. Proper installation and regular maintenance also contribute to their resilience. While smaller hailstones may not pose a significant threat, larger ones can cause damage. Consider skylight protection methods like covers or screens in hail-prone areas to enhance durability and minimize potential harm.

Yes, you can add blinds or shades to both roof windows and skylights, but roof windows tend to have more options available. Retractable skylight shades are popular on both options for added privacy, light control, and heat reduction, although they’re more expensive than manually-operated blinds or shades. If you have a roof window or skylight set in a high ceiling, a motorized or solar-powered skylight window covering is probably your best bet.

The most popular treatment for a skylight is skylight shades. There are five primary types: manual, motorized, blackout, cellular//honeycomb, and Venetian. Motorized skylight shades are the most convenient, especially for skylights that are higher up, but manual shades are the most cost-effective treatments. Cellular/honeycomb shades are a perfect option for anyone who wants energy efficiency and an attractive look.

To maintain a skylight and ensure its performance over time, regular maintenance is required. This includes periodically cleaning the glass and frame to remove dirt, debris, and condensation. It is also crucial to inspect the seals and flashing at least once a year for any signs of wear, degradation, or leaks, paying special attention after heavy storms. Ensure that the drainage system is clear to prevent water buildup and potential leaks. Address minor issues like cracks promptly and consider occasional resealing to prevent drafts and moisture problems. While energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings or double glazing may require less upkeep, periodic professional servicing can help keep any skylight in optimal condition.

Water will leak through a skylight if there are issues in the sealing of the skylight. Find and fix those issues yourself if possible, but it’s a good idea to contact a professional, as there could be much more water damage than you initially saw. Plus, it’s dangerous to work on a roof without the proper safety equipment and know-how.
