"A/C unit not working..... and it was hot. Called Mid TN and got Stacey, the owner. He said he would be there around noon. At noon he called and said a repair was taking longer than anticipated but confirmed he would be there by 4. At 330 he called and said he was 25 minutes away. Arrived on time, diagnosis the problem and had me "cooling down" in 25 minutes. Great Job. Fair price. His young teenaged son was with him dressed in the same outfit as Dad. The whole experience was excellent. At the top of my call list."

"My husband and I came home from our vacation and two days later the AC unit was on the fritz. We immediately called Derryberry & their technician was at our house within 90 minutes (it was July & they were backed up!) Great service and within minutes we felt cool air again. Will be using them for all of our HVAC needs."

Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

The best way to compare HVAC quotes is getting a few detailed quotes from local companies with good reputations. Then, go over the quotes line by line. Protect yourself by insisting on in-person estimates that include equipment manufacturer names, model numbers, SEER ratings, amounts and numbers of materials, details of warranties on equipment and labor, and other specifics.

Knowing the exact equipment and materials is the only way that you can fairly compare quotes. Quotes that are much lower than others can be a sign that the company isn’t providing the best quality service or materials.

Yes, ventless portable air conditioners exist, and not all standard portable air conditioners must be vented through a window.

Ventless portable units, often called evaporative coolers, do not have exhaust hoses. They use a water reservoir and a cooling pad to add moisture to the air, making it feel cooler. These units work best in dry climates because humid areas cannot absorb much additional moisture.

For standard portable air conditioners that do require venting, a window is not the only option; they can also be vented through a door, wall, or ceiling. However, it is essential to vent these units properly. Running a standard portable AC without venting it is counterproductive because it needs to expel heat to cool the room. Failing to do so will only increase the room's temperature.

There are a few things you can do to make your AC repair technician’s job easier and your home more comfortable while you wait for AC repair:

  • Cut back trees, shrubs, and weeds around the outdoor compressor

  • Clear a pathway inside and outside to your AC components

  • Set up a ladder for attic access if necessary

  • Pull your window AC out of the window and place in an easily accessible spot

  • Supplement with fans and open windows to help keep your house comfortable

In some cases, yes, portable air conditioners are worth buying. They’re a relatively affordable option for cooling small spaces. (On average, they cost between $100 and $500 per unit.) Plus, they’re easy to set up, and you can move them around to cool various parts of your home as needed. However, they aren’t the most efficient AC option, and they tend to be noisy.

The average life span of an HVAC system is 15 to 20 years. Even if your old air conditioner is still functional, it isn't as energy-efficient as a newer system (especially one with an Energy Star designation). Older HVAC systems aren't as efficient, and the 10-year mark is when you should start making full system replacement plans. Twenty years in, that plan should be well underway rather than waiting for the unit to die.
