"I cannot say enough great things about the owner of Altract painting, Zack, and his team. They showed up on time every day, worked all day, cleaned up at the end of each day, and kept my home spotless throughout the entire project. I have a large home and they did the entire interior. They finished in the exact amount time Zack told me. I also received the full written estimate the same day Zack came out, which was a big deal because everyone else took several days to send theirs in. The cut in lines are immaculate and the colors recommended by Zack came out amazing. Altracts attention to detail from the initial bid to the completion of the job was great. I highly recommend this company to anyone in need of painting and I will have them back out in the fall to do my exterior. A huge thanks to Altract Painting for making my home look brand new! And thank you Zack!!"

Painting questions, answered by experts

On most untreated wood fences, there is no need to sand before treating. You typically only need to sand if there’s an old coat of paint or stain on your fence. If you do need to sand off a previous paint or protective coating (like an old stain or sealant), use medium-grit sandpaper.

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

The general consensus is that two coats of stain are required and since the cedar is siding, a third coat of sealant is always a good idea. This helps protect the wood and stain, so you won’t need to resand and restain for at least a decade. Each stain after the first will darken the wood, so be aware of that when choosing a colored stain.

Yes, many fence repair services include treatments like sanding, priming, rust prevention, and repainting to protect the fence and restore its appearance. These services help prevent further corrosion and improve aesthetics. However, since not all providers include this, it is best to confirm what is covered before scheduling the repair.

You should stain both sides of your fence to get the full benefits. Fences often fall along property lines, so you may want to save a buck by leaving your neighbor’s side in the dust. If you do that, all you get is a slightly better view. Moisture and UV rays can still sneak in through the side that’s unpainted or worn down and damage your fence. Rot and rust will spread, even if you can’t see it from your side of the lawn.
