"Trevor has been an amazing contractor who has helped us through the process of installing a large interior door for an office. He has helped ensure the space was properly prepared for installation of the door. The other contractors who have assisted Trevor have also exceeded my expectations. They have been extremely detail oriented and have done everything to ensure the best outcome. I would definitely work with Trevor for any future projects."

"Handywork Group was contacted to do complete interior painting and some carpentry work, their estimate was very professional and spelled out exactly what they would do with a reasonable price. They came daily worked and cleaned up every night ,the job was done on time and at the quoted price. I couldn’t be happier with their work."

"Overall Ethan and his staff were very professional and efficient. On our initial meeting Ethan listened to us and developed a work plan that would meet our needs. He was prompt in submitting a reasonable estimate and answered all our questions. We set a date to begin. The weather caused a delay, but Ethan was quick to notify us of the delay. Another start date was set and the work was done. We had four projects (repair ceiling in the garage, repair the main shower grout, replace floor trim, and design/build a sunroom step). We are very pleased with the final results of the work. The staff completed their tasks in a timely manner and were really nice guys. I would highly recommend Ethan Putnam and his staff at All Around Solutions LLC."

"The pro was on the ball with a timeline and costs involved, and it’s unfortunate that I found a solution to the problem on my own and didn’t need his services. I’d definitely keep him in mind though if you need a good contract done."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

Yes, you will need a jack for a rim joist replacement. To prevent sagging and facilitate the removal of load-bearing wood, you’ll need to relieve the pressure from this joint before beginning work.

Due to hydraulics and other specialized equipment, a sill plate and rim joist replacement are not typically a DIY project. Hiring a professional structural engineer and experienced contractors is the best approach to replacing rotted sill plates and rim joists.

It's possible to turn your carport into a living space, but there are additional factors to address over turning it into a garage. HVAC, plumbing, and electricity won't be optional, and you'll need finished flooring, drywall, trim work, and legal ceiling height, for starters. Also, keep in mind that living space conversions may require upgrading the foundation underneath, and the permits might be more expensive as well.
