"We really enjoyed the experience with Jim and his crew. I have done a number of tile remodels in another state and have sone experience with this process. Jim really knows what he is doing and responded to my nit-picky concerns with interest and patience. We transformed a tub/shower alcove into a beautiful walk-in shower with a new bathroom floor. Yes, but you’ll have to use some other type of tool to avoid damaging the tile and possibly injuring yourself. Some alternatives to tile cutters include a glass cutter, angle grinder, and wet saw. Depending on the tile material, you might simply be able to measure and score it with something sharp, like a carbide-tipped pencil, and break it off. Be sure to sand the edge for a smooth installation.

It’s important to leave a gap in the corner when tiling to allow room for tile expansion. Leaving between one eighth of an inch to one tenth of an inch is enough space. 

Add a T-shaped spacer to each corner of a tile when placing it. You’ll want to nudge the tiles closer together so the spacers are touching each corner. When you’re done installing your tile, you can remove each spacer, wash them, and use them for your next project.

If the hearth ends against a wall, you can use a tile cutter as you normally would. However, if the edge of your hearth ends with no surface pressing against it,you may want to look into rounded tiles. These give a smooth edge to your hearth and make sure cut edges aren’t visible. You can also see if the tile you have has pieces that have been glazed or rounded on one edge. You’d then cut the tile and place it normally, with the cut edge facing inward. 

Taking the time to properly prepare your tile backsplash before painting and treating it with care afterward is the best way to ensure its longevity. While the tile can last for the life of the home, you may have to repaint it after a few years. However, using only mild cleanser and water to keep it clean can maximize the paint's lifespan.
