You can dry pour concrete over existing concrete, but it’s best to use wet pour concrete instead. Dry pour concrete is easier to apply, but in order for new concrete to adhere to old concrete, it needs the right mixture for slow, uniform curing. Additionally, dry pour concrete is less durable and less resistant to cracking and concrete sinking, so dry pouring over an existing slab may result in surface imperfections appearing prematurely.

If the cracks in your concrete patio are cosmetic, you can pour a concrete overlay over the patio to cover them up. However, you shouldn’t cover more severe cracks because the underlying damage will simply cause new cracks to appear in the overlay. Patio repair costs $750 to $2,500, depending on the type of repairs and the extent of the damage.

Concrete can crack from general wear, improper installation, or in response to uneven support from the soil underneath. Small, thin cracks on the surface of aging concrete are usually a result of normal wear and tear, while cracks on new concrete more likely indicate a problem with installation. If you also treat the underlying problem, it can be a worthwhile and permanent solution.

The ideal base for concrete is even, firm, and permeable to encourage drainage. Depending on your project's weight requirements, a combination of gravel, sand, or other aggregates is best. While you can technically pour concrete over grass, dirt, or an old piece of concrete, you risk threatening the concrete's stability.
