"Shephard Plumbing came almost as quickly as I posted the request for a bid. He politely listened while I explained what I thought was wrong, then went on to locate the real problem and repair it. The price was right in line with what I expected, and lower than I thought it would be for the time involved. It’s been about a week now and everything seems to be working fine."

"As always, wonderful job! A+++++++ Quality work, fair pricing! We have been using Ben Franklin, for I think about seven years now :-) We will go with no one else. I’ll be honest, in our area, professional behaving plumbers, are actually quite rare to find. SAVE yourself! So you don’t have to experience substandard work, exorbitant bills, or upsetting experiences with RUDE, unprofessional business owners. We are in Georgetown, and never found a good fit for us with any of the companies down here.(we did not try all) At BEN FRANKLIN, EVERY single technician, receptionist, owner, or other employee that has ever helped us, has ALWAYS been friendly, respectful, professional, kind, helpful, and pretty much any other positive quality that you would want in a business and more importantly, the qualities of someone who you would come into to your home! A++++++"

"During the virus crises my son and his family were in dire need of a plumber, one is disabled and they were suffering other virus related setbacks; I am stuck away in another state and can't get home to help out; Roto-Rooter was beyond helpful, sent someone out immediately, then called to advise me progress and details; and best of all, they allowed me to take care of the bill by phone to help out the family. Couldn't have been a more pleasant, professional experience."

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

Inspect your system immediately after any major hurricane for ground shifting or pipe displacement. You should also schedule plumbing updates if you notice visible rust or pitting on outdoor fixtures, as Surfside Beach salt air accelerates corrosion. Additionally, water discoloration or frequent clogs following the busy summer rental season signal a clear need for off-season maintenance and system upgrades.

Helpful?

Updating your plumbing directly increases your home's resale appeal in Surfside Beach. Buyers and investors closely scrutinize coastal properties for reliable systems that support short-term rental income. Documented upgrades, like elevating water heaters for flood resilience, reduce buyer negotiation leverage and support your asking price. Modernizing your system also ensures you meet local habitability standards required for rental licenses.

Helpful?

Start by identifying your FEMA flood zone designation, as this dictates where you must place water heaters and shutoff valves. You also need to know your home's construction era, since many SC houses built between the 1970s and 1990s contain defective polybutylene supply lines. Finally, note your foundation type and proximity to saltwater, as elevated crawl spaces and coastal air heavily influence material selection.

Helpful?

Corrosion-resistant materials are essential for plumbing in coastal SC environments. You must avoid galvanized steel entirely, as it deteriorates rapidly in humid, salt-laden air. Select non-metallic supply lines and heavily insulated pipes for any runs exposed under elevated homes. For water heaters located in flood zones, always choose durable, rust-proof connection components that comply with state residential building codes.

Helpful?

You must authorize all permit applications before starting major plumbing work in Surfside Beach. Homeowners also decide how to meet Base Flood Elevation requirements when replacing water heaters or pressure tanks. If your property contains aging polybutylene pipes, you must choose between targeted repairs and a full system replacement. Finally, you are responsible for selecting durable fixtures that withstand heavy rental wear.
