"Rick did a great job removing the popcorn and making our ceilings look brand new. He also repaired our walls which were in terrible shape. He is very trustworthy, responsive, fair, and he hit our deadline as he said he would."

"Oceanside Renovation follows the 3 R's - Responsive, Responsible and Reasonable. I needed my living room/kitchen area painted after removing vinyl wallpaper. I was hesitant to get the work done because of an experience with another painter who did a similar task of removing and painting in the bath and hall. After that work was done, I was cleaning up plaster dust for weeks. After hiring Oceanside I was so pleased with the outcome. Janssen assured me that there would not be a mess. The first day he (and his adorable wife) removed the wallpaper. Then Janssen sanded the walls using a sander with a vacuum attached. There was no mess at all. The next day the walls were painted with a good quality paint in the color I requested. The job was finished in 2 days and the experience of working with Oceanside was so easy. I hope to use Oceanside again for any future projects and I will not hesitate to refer my friends to them."

"James was very polite and professional when I talked to him about going out and taking a look at the property. He called me back very quickly for a quote and description of the repairs that were to be done. He was there within 3 days to do the work and finished that day. The price was very reasonable and he did not try haggle me into repairing the entire roof, which prior to me calling him, two other roofers told me the entire roof must be replaced. I knew the entire roof did not need to be replaced at the time. James is a very professional and trusworthy contractor that I would recommend to anyone."

Plaster Repair FAQs, answered by experts

You can technically just paint over hairline cracks in plaster since these cracks are often harmless, but this will mostly be a waste of paint. Paint will only hide the hairline crack for a few months before it shows up again. The best solution is to repair the crack with flexible filler or joint compound before repainting.

It’s not a good idea to plaster over broken plaster (unless by broken you’re referring to cracked, in which case that’s perfectly fine). However, broken plaster can be a sign of a larger underlying issue like foundation damage or severe damage to the lath holding up the plaster, so it’s worth investigating before you simply plaster on top of the damage.

Yes, you can speed up the time it takes for plaster to dry, but it's important to do so carefully to avoid issues like cracking or crumbling. Proper ventilation is key; open a window or use a fan to circulate air in the room. Heat can also accelerate drying, but be cautious, as too much heat can cause the plaster to dry too quickly and crack. Check the plaster's packaging for the recommended drying temperature and set the room's thermostat accordingly. While managing humidity is important, avoid using a dehumidifier, which can remove moisture too aggressively and result in crumbly plaster.

Your walls are likely cracking due to fluctuations in the temperature outside. Drywall tends to expand and contract when temperatures and humidity levels change, and this repeated movement can lead to cracks in your walls, particularly around door frames. If you have multiple diagonal cracks, you may want to have your foundation inspected, as cracks can also be a sign of a bigger issue.

You can skim coat plaster, but it’s better to repair the plaster itself. A skim coat is a thin coat of drywall joint compound spread over the surface of a wall. The result is a flat finish that looks pleasing, but part of the appeal of plaster is its imperfections and aesthetic. Skim coating is best when limited to drywall applications.
