Most gas stoves either have a shutoff valve inside the oven drawer compartment or behind the stove wall. Cooktop shutoff valves are usually inside the base cabinet, and wall ovens usually have a shutoff valve in the cabinet below or next to the unit. Construction regulations require installing a shutoff valve within six feet of the appliance. So, if you can’t find the valve on the appliance, look around the connecting gas pipes within the six-foot radius.

A water hammer refers to the banging or knocking sound you hear in your water pipes after you turn off your faucet or when your washing machine or dishwater fills. This happens when highly pressurized water suddenly stops moving in your pipes due to a valve closing or your well pump shutting down quickly. Try adjusting the pressure setting on your water pressure tank—it should be below 50 psi (pounds per square inch). Or have a plumber install a water hammer arrestor.

PVC pipes are more affordable and applicable in most parts of your home’s plumbing system than copper pipes. They also require less maintenance. The only major restriction with PVC pipes is their low heat tolerance. Therefore, they’re not your best option for supplying hot water from the water heater throughout your home. PVC pipes are also larger in diameter, so they may not fit into certain spaces in your home.

In general, PVC (polyvinyl chloride), PEX (polyethylene), and copper are the three piping materials used in new constructions when adding water supply lines. There are some caveats. PEX and copper are considered ideal when running lines that will handle hot water because they are not at risk for melting and warping the way that PVC piping can. At $0.40 to $4 per linear foot, PEX is considered more affordable than copper pipes, which cost $2 to $12 per linear foot. PVC is considered appropriate in water lines for cold taps only.

The most likely reason is rust. You can try using lubricant to loosen the metal components, but you’ll most likely need to call in a plumber to professionally sand down the rust without damaging the rest of your bathtub. If the rust is extensive, it might be a sign that you need to replace the plumbing.
