"You wonâ t find a more honest, more professional or more skilled excavator/operator than Matt Mello, owner of South Shore excavation. Matt has now done two big jobs for me, the first being to rip out the old floor in our 4-car garage and install a new floor, the second being to dig up/expose and waterproof the garage foundation. In both cases, Mattâ s pricing was extremely fair, he delivered 100% on his promises, finished the work in a timely manner and left an immaculate job site every day. I really canâ t recommend Matt Mello & South Shore Excavation highly enough. If youâ re looking for a true professional who does what he says heâ s going to do, when he says heâ s going to do it, look no further."

"Excellent. Do not hesitate hiring this crew. They are hardworking professionals. They know plants too. I have a two-acre piece of property with at least 40 various sized gardens. They did all the weeding, mulching and edging. Pruning and removing all the debris. Plus many other chores…all in 3 days. Bobby made suggestions and safety recommendations that were greatly appreciated. I’m so impressed with this company. They will maintain the yard every month, keeping it looking beautiful. Don’t think twice about hiring them. Just do it!"

"Billias Restoration was excellent and extremely responsive. We had a major project and needed our ceiling taken down and redone. They did an excellent job with the demolition and clean up. You would never even know there was work done. I would highly recommend them."

"Roberts Construction built our healing studio, and we couldn’t be happier with the entire experience. From start to finish, they were professional, communicative, and incredibly respectful of the space. The crew kept the job site clean and organized throughout the build, which we truly appreciated. The project was completed in a timely manner, with great attention to detail and craftsmanship. We had zero issues along the way, and any questions we had were addressed promptly and thoroughly. It’s clear they take pride in their work. We would absolutely hire Roberts Construction again and highly recommend them to anyone looking for reliable, high-quality construction work."

"Anthony was very professional and clear on what was going to take place. Anthony and his crew arrived on schedule and completed the replacement of the broken sewer main in one day. No mess was left, grounds were smoothed out and ready for new lawn! Anthony's wife is very nice to talk to and takes care of any communication needed. My husband and I would highly recommend this company."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Hardscaping often requires preparation of the ground in the area where the feature is being installed. This can include digging, compacting, and leveling the soil, ensuring adequate drainage, and removing any existing plants. The extent of preparation needed will depend on the type and size of the hardscaping feature being installed.

Excavation is priced in cubic yards, so you’ll need to find the volume of the area in order to calculate costs. Multiply the length, width, and proposed depth of your excavation site, then convert it into yards to get the volume. Multiply this figure by the price per cubic yard.

Most homeowners can measure by hand to get a rough estimate, even if it’s tedious. You may want to pull out a tape measure or use a string to help mark the area.

Digging a well can cost between $20 and $25,000, depending on your needs. If you’re looking to dig a well yourself, all you need is a shovel. If you’re looking to have a well drilled by a professional, you can expect to pay around $15 to $30 per foot. The total cost of drilling a well will average to $5,500.

Yes, an excavation company is the best option for land grading and yard leveling. General landscapers might be able to tackle these projects, but an excavation company will do a better job because they’re used to operating the necessary heavy machinery. Landscapers might opt to do the work manually, which takes much longer and could cost you more in labor fees. Finally, excavation companies will understand local regulations and know when you need permits to legalize the work, while a landscaper might not.

A crawl space can be as little as 42 inches below the grade of your house, but this is not always recommended in flood-prone areas. At a minimum, there must be at least 16 inches of clearance between the ground and the floor joists to access the space in an emergency.
