Rekeying your own locks is a low-cost task that prevents you from having to replace the locks themselves completely. You can purchase a rekey kit from most hardware stores, but make sure you’re buying the kit from the brand of lock in your home that you’re going to rekey.

If you’re moving into a new home or have a roommate moving out, it’s smart to change the locks. If you experience a break-in or other crime, you should change it then too, or if you ever lose your keys. If part of the key is protruding out of the lock, you can use a pair of needle-nosed pliers or tweezers to gently turn the key in the lock to open the door. If the key is fully inserted into the lock, you may also be able to use a key extractor to help turn the key into the unlocked position. 

But if the key breaks off halfway into the lock or you simply can’t reach it to help engage the unlocking mechanisms, you should probably call a professional.
