"Excellent all around experience!!!!!!!! After a series of storms and gradual water soaking our basement carpet several times, I finally called Waterproofing One in April, 2017 after seeing their ad several times on our St. Basil's church bulletin. I spoke initially with the owner-Joe who was helpful and he dispatched Dave Cook who came over within an hour. Dave Cook has been in this business and related utility engineering previously for over 30 years and really knows his stuff. Dave was extremely thorough, spending time in the basement, looking at some pictures I took of the damage and spent a considerable amount of time walking around the exterior of my property and reviewing the landscaping where most problems start. Dave wrote up a report of what work was needed including extending downspouts, recommending we have our contractor add a louvered door at the top of the steps for aeration (a great idea given no windows in basement) , waterproofing the well water closet walls, spraying impacted area for potential mold, and installing a new French drain and sump-pump system with battery backup. Gene and his crew then came over on May 17, 2018 and performed the construction and installation work and did a great job. Those guys worked extremely hard in what is inherently a muddy line of work and were very courteous, professional and left the basement very clean. Gene took extra time to show us exactly what they were doing as they drilled holes into the lower cinder block walls, laying of the perforated pipe and some of the damp mold on the wooded studs he extracted at the impacted area. We paid exactly what Dave originally quoted! Dave Cook came back checked on things and made some other recommendations including adding stones around the foundation outside and in holes to avoid soil erosion and soften the acceleration of rain water into the ground. Once the work was finished and our carpenter redid the walls and painting, We had subsequently refinished the basement with high end vapor/mold resistant padding from Mohawk and a quality polyester carpet. 15 months later and here we are on September 30, 2019 after 50+ rain storms since installation and NO WATER nor Mold issues in the basement!!! We are really enjoying our basement again thanks to WATERPROOFING ONE!!!! 5-STARS!!!!!!!!"

"I called The Driveway Lady to get a quote and ideas on how to solve a difficult problem with my concrete porch. My home was built in the late 1800s and has a large raised concrete wrap around porch surrounded by beautiful stone walls. Replacement would be prohibitive, but there were some substantial cracks and pitting. It was like walking on an ocean reef, it was so rough, and the repairs made to the cracks wouldn’t hold, but Jean determined that it was otherwise secure with no water penetration below. She suggested they repair the cracks with hydraulic cement and then coat the entire surface with Miracote to seal both the cracks and smooth the surface and protect from future pitting. They worked with me to get the color right when I didn’t like the initial application.  Jean stands by her work and does an outstanding job. The people she has working for her are also courteous, pleasant and easy to work with. I can’t recommend her and her team enough."

Customers say: True professional

"The crew did an outstanding job.  The compaction process was very thorough and the guys worked flawlessly around my house, and were very considerate to my existing landscaping.  Matt helped with the design and created a custom pattern with standard size pavers.  I get a lot of compliment from our guests.  Some compliments came from other people who do similar work.  Matt did a great job of explaining the process so there were no surprises during construction.  We had a small issue around one of the posts with a cracked paver and he came out and fixed it right away.  Overall I am very pleased with the job and he will be my first call in the future."

Small jobs welcome

"Crew did not show up on first day; spoke with Pat (owner) who apologized for delay and not notifying us; different crew each day w/different foreman. Did not clear concrete work area of flower pots and furniture (never recommended to us to do so). Left hose faucet on twice after we asked to be sure it was off when they were done for the day. Left lights on in basement. Final walk thru revealed a few items that needed correction. Quick response when we called with questions/issues. Pat was receptive to our feedback and assured us he would address issues with foremen."

"John and his crew were professional answered all my questions and explained it fully. They were careful of my ceramic tile that was put down less than a year ago. When taking out the old wall they dealt with rows of glass bottles, door hinges and chisels and let us know that these obstacles took extra time.. While working on the foundation they had to deal with alot of rain. My front yard was a mess from the machinery. When they were finished they leveled out the track marks, the only thing I need to do is add grass seed"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

In Reading, homeowners often overlook the impact of local clay soils and limestone bedrock, which can cause shifting if not properly addressed by a masonry contractor. Skipping drainage solutions, choosing materials unsuited for repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and delaying projects until late fall are frequent missteps. Failing to secure necessary permits or using incompatible mortar on historic homes can also result in foundation repair issues.

Helpful?

After masonry work in Reading, shield new surfaces from moisture and temperature swings for the first month, especially during freeze-thaw cycles. Apply a breathable masonry sealer within three months to guard against Reading’s wet climate, and plan to reapply every few years. Schedule a post-winter inspection for settling or cracks, promptly remove leftover mortar, and document all repairs for future reference and warranty claims.

Helpful?

In Reading, begin spring by checking for freeze-thaw damage, spalling, or efflorescence on masonry surfaces. Inspect drainage systems before summer storms, and assess mortar joints for wear during warmer months. In fall, reseal exposed masonry and check for gaps before winter. Throughout winter, monitor for new cracks or ice buildup, especially in areas prone to flooding or near the Schuylkill River.

Helpful?

When hiring in Reading, prioritize masonry contractors with proven experience in local stone types like brownstone and limestone, and familiarity with Reading’s unique soil and drainage challenges. Ask for references from recent area projects and confirm their knowledge of local building codes. Contractors with strong supplier relationships and a track record of timely, high-quality work are best suited for Reading homes.

Helpful?

In Reading, homes built before 1940 may have irregular stone foundations, lime mortar, or visible settlement, all of which can complicate masonry work. Watch for cracks, water stains, or evidence of past flooding—especially near the Schuylkill River. Properties on hillsides or with high water tables often require specialized drainage and grading strategies to ensure a stable foundation for new masonry projects.
