"We always try and support local businesses when we can. Not only was he the first and only plumber to call me back [within minutes, during the middle of the Covid19 pandemic], he was very transparent and upfront on the phone about his business practices and pricing. He arrived in a few hours and made an amazing first impression - before he walked up to the porch, he had donned a mask, gloves, and booties. It may seem like a small thing, but during this time it meant absolute professionalism and made me feel relaxed and confident about hiring them. He immediately set to work trying to clear the blockage from the vent pipe in the front yard and was successful in short order. I was just very impressed with the entire experience and would recommend Palmerio Plumbing to anyone."

Customers say: True professional

"My family and I absolutely LOVE our new shower. Joe and his team did a tremendous job and we highly recommend them. They were professional, knowledgeable, hardworking, and courteous from beginning to end. The cost was reasonable and as quoted, even though they had to do some additional work along the way due to our old home/plumbing system. They explained everything in detail and made sure we were satisfied every step of the way. The finished product is beautiful and we could not be happier!"

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

In Reading, permits are required for most plumbing work, including new installations, major repairs, and water heater replacements. The Reading Building and Trades Division oversees permitting and inspections, which typically include rough-in and final inspections to ensure compliance with local plumbing code. For historic or older homes, additional steps may be needed. Always verify requirements directly with the Reading Building and Trades Division before beginning any project.

Helpful?

In Reading, hidden costs often stem from discovering old lead or galvanized pipes that require replacement to meet current code, as enforced by the Reading Building and Trades Division. Additional expenses may arise if water damage or mold is found during repairs, or if temporary water shutoffs are necessary. For older homes, restoring disturbed walls or floors after plumbing work is another common, unexpected step to consider.

Helpful?

For plumbing projects in Reading, freeze-resistant materials like PEX piping are highly recommended due to the region's cold winters. Copper is also common, especially in older homes, but PEX offers flexibility and durability against freezing. Local plumbing supply stores in Reading can advise on materials that handle the city's unique soil conditions and moisture levels, ensuring your plumbing system is well-suited for the area's environment.

Helpful?

Reading's cold winters increase the risk of frozen or burst pipes, making pipe insulation and proper placement essential. Heavy spring rains can stress sump pumps and lead to basement flooding, so regular sump pump maintenance is crucial. Seasonal temperature swings may also cause older pipes to expand and contract, potentially leading to leaks. Planning for these local weather patterns helps extend the life of your plumbing system.

Helpful?

Yes, shower water goes into the septic tank. Shower water is a type of greywater, and in fact, all water used in a home with a septic system—including water from sinks, toilets, the dishwasher, and the washing machine—drains into the tank. When shower water enters the tank, debris like soap and hair travels with it. The solid debris sinks to the bottom to become sludge, while soap residue joins the scum layer at the top. The remaining water is treated in the tank before moving to the drain field for further treatment and dispersal. It is important to avoid putting oil or harsh chemicals down any drain, as they can cause clogs or disrupt the beneficial bacteria required for proper wastewater management in the septic system.
