"From the moment I put in a request for quote and Fleming Landscaping & Home Improvements, LLC answered my call immediately. I was already impressed. They were extremely professional and kept us abreast of everything from start to finish. We got a reasonable bid and they started the work on the day they said they would and did an exceptional job. My porch has not been that sturdy in many, many years and it is so solid now. My husband and I cannot stop looking at it. Anyone that is looking for a top notch contractor who keeps their word and gets the job done, you need NOT look any further than Fleming Landscaping & Home Improvements, LLC. We were so impressed with their work, we will be hiring them again! A pure pleasure to work with. Other contractors should take a page out of their book. This is how you treat customers!!!! A Chef Kiss!"

"We couldn't be happier with our new 4-season sunroom, and we can't say enough about the people at Better Living Patio Rooms! We've had a lot of work done at our house over the years, but the crew from Better Living stands above the rest. Once the project began, work continued - without pause - until it was completed. From Anthony in sales, Mike in project management, Michelle and Jenn in the office, and Frank and Justin (who did the work), they were professional, detail-oriented, and friendly. I highly recommend Better Living. Brian in McCandless."

"Unbelievable!!! 10/10 recommend! Being a new home owner in an older house it can be extremely overwhelming trying to get the projects you want done. Old city came to my house with a multitude of projects on the checklist and completed each one with an attitude like it was their own house! They first fixed/installed flooring in the basement with an incredible amount of focus and integrity on the work at hand and it was not an easy task with so many issues left from old owners BUT It turned out amazing! I also had broken stairs, a closet maid to install and issues with a wall in the bathroom. They did it all quickly and efficiently. It is amazing to watch people take their trade to the heart to try and provide the best quality and experience for the Customer. Iâ ve employed many contractors in the past with the â thatâ s good enoughâ mindset leaving me with more problems than I started with, old city is the complete opposite. They come to give you the best possible outcome while also letting you feel part of the project giving you the opportunities to figure out what you want. They are so easy to work. If youâ re looking for quality work from a trusted Veteran Owned company at a reasonable price, Old City Remodeling is the place to go!"

Customers say: Quick response

"We hired Anthony to perform a bathroom and basement remodel. I can't say enough about how pleased we are in every aspect of Anthony and Mark's work, cost and professionalism. The communication and reliability was always timely, thorough and just excellent, which are things that lack in a lot of contractors we have dealt with in the past. Although we had many challenges during the job, Anthony handled them all with flexibility. It was a true collaboration from beginning to end. Not only was he easy to deal with, but the work was done way above our expectations with a focus on attention to detail. He also made sure everything was cleaned up at the end of every day, even if I said not to worry about it. Overall, these guys went the extra mile and made a difficult job enjoyable for us. We will be coming back to A&J for any plumbing or remodeling needs in the future."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.

Hiring a woodworker can be expensive, depending on the job, but it’s very often well worth the investment. Woodworkers are able to provide custom pieces of furniture and handmade construction to present a finished product that is exactly to your specifications. If you have a specific vision for a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture or home feature, the cost of hiring a professional woodworker is worthwhile. Plus, you’ll often get a higher quality product than what you could buy in stores for a fraction of the price.

Many contractors prefer checks because they’re easy to track and have no associated fees. However, many also accept credit cards (though they might add a fee to cover their processing costs).

Landscape timbers can last 10 to 20 years in the ground when installed correctly. Pressure-treated timbers will last longer than non-treated ones, as pressure treatment makes the wood more rot-resistant. Wood exposed to high moisture levels or extreme temperature and weather fluctuations may not last as long as wood in drier areas with more consistent weather.
