"They were able to replace the skylight in less than 2 weeks after the quote. They did a good job and make the finish on the inside look good. A few weeks later, there was a heavy rain and my new skylight is no longer leaking like my old one that was replaced."

"I requested an inspection of leaks around existing skylights. The original consultation was professional and efficient. The contact was knowledgeable and direct with costs up front. I was very surprised with the quote because it was half the price of two other contractors from whom I had already received quotes. All contractors used the same skylight ( Velux) and were certified installers. Paragon explained that they must have quoted a price to install skylights as brand new, but mine were a replacement - and Velux has a qualified range for both of these jobs. That aside, the team was great, the new skylights are nice, and the leaks are no more."

"We requested bids from 2 companies with top reviews on Angie's List. The bids were about the same but we were much more impressed with the thorough inspection undertaken by Greg Impriano. He seemed much more interested in making sure we got the kind of roof we wanted and that it would address all of our concerns. He had specific recommendations for dealing with water infiltration from ice damming we had experienced during winter storms in the past and incorporated extra protection in those areas of the roof into our bid. When we changed our mind and decided to also install new skylights with the new roof, Greg came back and verified measurements to make sure the new skylights would fit well into the available openings. We also were impressed with the 5-star warranty the Impriano company is able to provide in conjunction with the shingle manufacturer. It is a very impressive warranty and one that gives us peace of mind that this is the last roof we will have to put on our house during our lifetime. Greg offered to arrange for samples of various shingles to be put on our roof to help us decide which shingles to use, but it wasn't necessary because there was a specific shingle we had in mind. Eric Impriano, Production Manager, showed up at the beginning of the project and visited frequently throughout to introduce us to his crew chief and to make sure our plantings were well-protected and that we were pleased with the work as it progressed. The crew was very industrious. Work proceeded smoothly and with a minimum of inconvenience to us. We are pleased with how seamlessly the trim on the new skylights line up with the trim on our interior finishes. Any questions we had during the work were promptly addressed by Eric or the crew chief, but there weren't many questions. We were impressed with all the work and the cleanup. Another crew came about a week later to do the gutter modifications we had requested as part of our bid. Again, all that work was done well and with a minimum of inconvenience to us. We are very happy with the installation of the new roof, new skylights and gutter modifications and are looking forward to many years of good protection thanks to the excellent workmanship and warranty.

***I'm going to add a note here for those considering whether to install new skylights with a new roof. At first, we decided not to replace our skylights with the new roof because we were not having problems with the skylights and assumed they would continue to perform well throughout the lifetime of the new roof. After both companies that gave us a bid suggested we consider replacing them, I did considerable independent research about the issue. The conclusion I reached from that research is that good skylights last longer than the lifetime of a roof, but probably not as long as the lifetime as two roofs. As most of our skylights were installed with the original roof, they were fine now, but likely were not going to remain problem-free throughout the lifetime of our new roof. In fact, there was a pretty good chance they would have to be replaced during the lifetime of the new roof, at considerable extra expense and impairing the new seamless roof covering we wanted to achieve. (Also, probably impairing the roof warranty as well.) We, therefore, decided that installing new skylights with the new roof was a good investment.

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can cover up a skylight if you no longer wish to have it in your space. There are a few options for covering up a skylight. One option is to install a skylight cover or shade that can be easily opened or closed as needed, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Another option is to cover the skylight with a solid material, such as plywood or drywall, effectively sealing it off. However, when covering a skylight, it's essential to ensure proper insulation and waterproofing to prevent any issues in the future.

Whether you need a permit to install a skylight depends on the scope of the project and local regulations. Generally, permits are required if the installation involves altering the structural components of your home, such as moving roof rafters. In some municipalities, a permit might also be necessary if the skylight protrudes above the highest point of your existing roof. However, if no structural changes are made, a permit may not be needed. The cost for a skylight installation permit is typically under $100. A convenient time to add a skylight is during a roof replacement, as your contractor can incorporate the new opening into the design.

Most homeowners insurance policies cover skyight damage that is caused by hail. Hail damage is considered a covered peril under most standard insurance policies. However, this only applies if your skylights were properly installed. Also, insurance policies vary, so be sure to check your individual policy to see if skylight hail damage is covered.

The type of lighting you choose can have a big part in the aesthetic and function of your space. Ambient lighting refers to indirect or diffused lighting that evenly reaches most areas of the space. Task lighting illuminates specific areas, such as a workspace. Accent lighting draws attention to details in your home, and decorative lighting draws attention to itself.

Ceiling costs depend on many factors, such as the material used and size, but coffered ceilings are considered one of the more expensive ceiling options. If you want to install a coffered ceiling but have a limited budget, consider using plywood instead of hardwood—it costs $2–$4.50 per square foot, while hardwood can be as much as $20 per square foot.
