Yes, cracked tiles allow water to seep through the substrate or subfloor, leading to mold and mildew growth. It can also cause severe structural damage. At the very least, water damage can cause your tile to lift from the substrate, meaning one cracked tile can lead to several cracked tiles. It’s a good idea to waterproof tile in areas with direct water exposure or lots of moisture.

There are several different products that allow underwater repair. Pool putty can help repair chips, cracks, and loose tiles without draining your pool, but it should only be used for a temporary fix. Certain two-part epoxy adhesives will cure underwater, too. That said, while it is technically possible to fix pool tiles underwater, it is usually not ideal, depending on the depth of your pool. You will still have to reach the tile, which means you might have to dive and make the repair while submerged.

You cannot tile directly over hot mop waterproofing because tile requires a smooth, solid surface to adhere properly. Additionally, the shower bed pan needs to be raised and sloped toward the drain to prevent water from pooling. However, you can hot mop and apply a sloped mortar bed over the top (to which the tile can then be adhered). 

To maintain tile and grout, clean the surfaces regularly with mild, non-abrasive cleaners and wipe up spills promptly to prevent buildup. It is also important to reseal the grout every 1-2 years to maintain its durability.

For glass tile, you want to use unsanded grout. Sanded grout is a stronger and grittier cement grout that is great for installing tiles with wider gaps and into joints. However, it is susceptible to scratching glass tile and is more difficult to use in thinner gaps. Unsanded grout, while more expensive, is easier to fit between thin gaps and is less harsh on delicate materials, like glass tile.
