"After spending a lot of time hearing about their big projects and getting the feeling that they really didn't want to resurface our pool even though they said that they would before they decided to transition to solely commercial work, we asked that they do it (our mistake - if you have to beg don't hire, but they built the original pool and it looked great). When they were finished there were white blotches all over the finish, orange marks. They had the audacity to tell us that it would look great in 10 years. ???? We had them drain the pool and fix the blotches. But when we got into it last summer it was incredibly rough. While we did not choose a smooth finish what we got was so rough that almost everyone who actually plays in the pool gets scraped and bathing suits pill from just sitting on the steps. Nothing like young kids crying because they got scraped by the side of the pool. We are talking bloody scrapes. It was also crumbling in a few spots. Two years later we are doing it all over again at our expense. Cannot begin to convey how disappointed we are."

NEPTUNE SWIMMING POOL COMPANY

For over 50 years, Neptune Pools has maintained its reputation as a leader in Oregon swimming pool construction, delivering high quality service and expertise for custom inground gunite pools and gunite spa installation throughout Oregon and the Northwest.

"Neptune built my swimming pool 20+ years ago and did a great job. Sadly, it's not the same company today as it was then. After a couple of poor service visits in the mid-2000's I quit using them for service/repair work but decided to give them another try this fall. Big mistake! Neptune overcharges for parts; does not give estimates for repairs, and does shoddy work. I contacted Neptune in October over a leaking vacuum breaker and a hard to turn multiport valve. At the time, I sent them pictures showing the leak to make sure they had the replacement part and Neptune's service manager, Matt, responded saying the technician would bring the part. However, when the technician arrived he said he'd never seen the email and did not have the part. He replaced the multiport valve and was on site less than 35 minutes. After he left I checked the replaced multiport valve and it was leaking in two places where the technician had overtightened the screws and cracked the plastic. When he returned with the vacuum breaker he reinstalled the multiport valve using a spare I was going to return to Amazon (for a $60 credit). After I complained about the two-hour service charge, Neptune cut it to one hour, but did not offer to pay for the valve their technician had cracked. But, things got even worse after that. Neptune invoiced me for $291 for the vacuum breaker valve part, which included their standard 20% markup. That seemed like a lot for such a simple part so I checked the part number on Amazon I found the identical item selling for $59.95 w/free shipping in less than 30 seconds. When I complained to Neptune's service manager that a 400% markup seemed excessive, his response was "No one can compete with Amazon prices so using that example is a moot point to me." If he knows Amazon prices are so much lower one can only wonder why they don't buy from Amazon in the first place unless it's to over-inflate their 20% part mark up. The bottom line is that if you want good quality work done at a fair price you'll want to look somewhere besides Neptune for your pool needs."

Pool Construction and Installation questions, answered by experts

Using a gas pool heater is the fastest way to heat an outdoor pool. Gas pool heaters are powerful and can increase pool water temperature by 1 to 3 degrees Fahrenheit per hour. Using a gas pool heater and a solar pool cover will get your pool warm as fast as possible.

If you don’t have the budget for one, there are numerous ways to warm up your pool without a heater. You can improve the insulation, use solar covers to trap heat from the sun, or even let a black hose sit in the sun until it heats up and delivers fresh, warm water straight to your pool.

Each state has its own regulations about pool fences, and laws to protect both swimmers and pool owners. Before installing a pool, you’ll need to research what the pool laws in your state, city, and county are to ensure that you’re adhering to the legal regulations. Inground pools typically need to have a fence around the entirety of them, but the rules regarding above-ground pools are less stringent. A good rule of thumb is to always have a fence around your pool to ensure safety for all.

Most importantly, you should never cut corners when building a pool. Whether it’s an in-ground or aboveground, poorly constructed pools are dangerous to both the swimmers and your property. Leaks can even lead to home foundation damage. While you can DIY smaller elements of pool installation, always hire a contractor to oversee the process.

Yes, with proper heating or cooling systems and energy-efficient glazing.
