"I had home a security camera network installed in my home from Technology First. What a great experience. Jamar came out to my home gave me several options. Set a time and date for installation followed up to confirm then did the job on the date we had made. Excellent installation. Set up and went over the equipment took care to make sure cameras were positioned right. Then followed up with a call to make sure everything was working fine. I ve already recommended him to a friend. Excellent business!! Thanks, Jamar"

"Helped solve a problem with our cameras not working in our home surveillance system. His quote was more reasonable than another quote but then Don called later with another possible solution that worked after I agreed to try it. It did and he saved me a huge amount of money. I would use his service again and recommend him to others. He was timely, courteous and friendly, plus he was honest enough to not try to gouge me for more money than was necessary to fix the problem. Thank you Don."

Home Security Systems questions, answered by experts

When deciding whether a home automation system is right for you, consider the advantages and disadvantages first.

Pros

  • Home automation can help make your home more energy efficient, possibly lowering utility bills.

  • A wide range of automated solutions is available to meet your needs.

  • Centralized and remote control of different home automation systems.

Cons

  • Home automation can be costly.

  • Not all automated systems are compatible with each other.

  • Over-dependence on home automation can be problematic if systems cannot connect to the cloud.

You should always install cameras at exterior doors and windows. Other areas where you should place cameras are your front and back yards, the garage and driveway, common living areas, hallways and staircases, and the basement. Remember, you can start with a small Wi-Fi security camera system and always add more cameras if needed.

A study from the University of North Carolina found that security system signs were one of the top ten deterrents for burglars when choosing a target, so they do have some effect. However, you can get into legal trouble for putting up fake signage, so it’s best only to put up signs when you have the alarms to back them up.

Technically, there isn't a difference between safe rooms and storm shelters. Both are designed to protect you from storms and extreme weather events. People often use “safe room” when discussing a shelter inside a building and storm shelter when talking about a detached unit.

Additionally, a safe room is understood to have more functions than a storm shelter. You may seek shelter in a safe room when you believe an intruder is in the home or when under another type of threat.

You likely can reset your house alarm without the code, but it depends on many factors like how it’s wired and whether or not there’s a default reset code. Most companies make bypassing a security alarm without entering your code challenging to prevent burglars from simply resetting the alarm during a break-in. Your best bet is to contact your alarm company directly to get specialized support for your situation.

But, while you wait for support, you can disconnect it from the power source to stop the alarm from going off.
