By allowing light, water, and nutrients to penetrate the soil, the grass can root down deeper and get more of what it needs to thrive. All of which is to say, if you care about the appearance of your lawn, yes, lawn aeration is usually worth the money—especially since it’s not that expensive.

Routine lawn care costs between $50 and $250 per service, with an average of around $100. Most homeowners need one service per week through the spring and summer, and many switch to snow removal services in the winter. The price you’ll pay will depend on a few different factors:

  • Size of your lawn

  • Complexity of your lawn layout and obstructions

  • Requested services 

  • Home’s location

  • How quickly your grass grows

Whether or not grass will fill in bare spots itself depends on the type of grass you have. For example, grass with rhizomes (e.g., Bermuda grass) and stolons (e.g., Saint Augustine grass) will naturally fill in bald spots as it spreads laterally. However, clump-forming grasses will not spread. 

When you don’t aerate your lawn, the soil will become more compact over time. This limits how much water can soak in to reach the roots of your grass, and it keeps oxygen and carbon dioxide from the plant roots. Eventually, compacted soil can weaken grass, while also making it more vulnerable to pests, diseases, and erosion and even causing it to die off.

If you have a beautifully thriving yard with no bald spots, you can choose to aerate your yard once every two years. Otherwise, having your lawn aerated at least once a year is recommended. And in those circumstances where you have a significant amount of thatch buildup or a thinning and bald yard, it's best to aerate twice a year to maintain a healthy lawn.
