Small jobs welcome

"Jerid and his crew did an amazing job on our site. From clearing the old out and prepping for the new home. Everything was done with professionalism. Jerid always had some amazing ideas and suggestions. No questions were stupid questions. Between Jerid and Brad there was an answer. We would definitely hire S4 again for our projects. We absolutely love how everything turned out. We really can't say enough about Jerid, Brad, Ty and Daydra!!"

"I hired Ben to recreate a retaining wall on my property. I gave home some guidance on how it should look, provided pictures and examples, however as he started to lay it out I had some modifications and feedback. He took all feedback and used his skills and experience to make it look natural but also function as a retaining wall. Beautiful and functional work at the end of the day and very reasonable pricing."

"Adam contacted me Friday morning within 2 hours of scheduling an appointment on Home Advisor that was to be the following Monday. He came by within 30 minutes to give me an onsite estimate. He gave me an estimate, I accepted, and he started work the next day, done within several hours. Adam is a Veteran, hard worker, stuck to the task and confirmed a few things along the way and made a few great suggestions. He's the type of guy you'd enjoy as a neighbor! Thanks Again Skyline Excavation... and especially, thank YOU Adam! ~David and Lisa"

"They did great work, in a timely manner, and it was great being able to leave it in their hands. He took the time to consult with me on how we could decommission my previous septic system, laid everything out and made himself available for questions, and then I was allowed to make an informed decision. That is just the kind of excellent customer service I needed considering it was a big job requiring extensive digging in order to set up a new drain field and tank for my septic. Definitely a great experience working with Nathan. I was so impressed I hired them for a second, smaller, project and I have offered to let them put a sign in my yard they did such a great job. I highly highly recommend them."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Hard soil could be a sign of overly dry dirt, either from poor drainage or drought. It's important to test the nutrient levels, density, and drainage capacity of your soil to see if it's absorbing water properly. Begin by adding a light layer of water and observing how long the soil retains moisture. If you experience a good deal of runoff, you may need to aerate your lawn, apply a wetting agent, or hire a professional for a closer look.

Downspouts should be buried at least 5 to 10 feet away from your foundation. This can vary depending on your local building codes, soil type, and property slope. The main goal is to ensure water is directed away from your foundation.

Call 811 to locate and mark the gas lines at least three days before digging. In many areas, you can dig within 18 inches of the lines, though in some locations, the distance may be further. Check local regulations, as you may need a utility company representative onsite when digging. Document your calls to 811 and precautions taken to avoid gas lines. A homeowner can be held liable for hitting a gas line in some cases, but contacting the proper authorities and following all guidelines can offer protection.

The rules and regulations regarding groundwater use vary between states. To find out if you can dig a well on your property, you’ll have to consult these regulations, address any compliance requirements, and get the appropriate permits. It’s also important to check that your intended location has the right geology and water table to support a well.

The best method for digging a trench depends on the scope of the project. For a short, shallow trench (less than 2 feet deep) in light, soft soil, digging by hand may be sufficient. However, digging by hand is labor-intensive, so consider the effort required. A machine trencher is the better option for longer trenches (over 100 feet), deeper ones, or when dealing with difficult soil conditions, such as rocky or hard ground, or obstructions like tree roots. A machine can save significant time and energy in these situations.
