"We re-sided our 1929 house recently, and during the tear-off phase it was the perfect time to have blown-in insulation performed to insulate our exterior walls. Ryan and his crew worked quickly and we are so much more comfortable with our walls finally insulated. We had a minor repair needed as a result of the drilling, and the company worked quickly to resolve it to our satisfaction. I will happily recommend them to others, and feel like this project pays for itself quickly in terms of energy efficiency and comfort."

Small jobs welcome

"Would recommend to anyone! Ulises Pro Insulation, LLC were great advocates for their customer's best interest. My attic space was under-insulated. They did a careful inspection of the space, and showed me photos of their findings. They were honest about there being no urgent issue, and about what might be limitations of working in such a tight space. Nonetheless, they were happy to attempt the service and were able to maximize the space's energy efficiency. They were fast to give an estimate, fast to schedule and complete the job, and they left the workspace spotless."

"Westside Drywall was the only firm willing to do what I requested, which was to repair and not replace under-floor insulation. As a result, their price was much lower. An added bonus was that they could schedule the job in a few days instead of a few weeks or months."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

One of the biggest disadvantages of glass garage doors is that they are not the best at insulating your garage. In the summer, heat can enter through the glass, while in the winter, heat can escape through the glass, increasing your electricity and gas bills as you crank up your HVAC unit. You can help mitigate the poorer insulation by investing in insulated glass and insulating your garage.

Mineral wool wraps are the most affordable and effective insulation for crawl space ducts. They are easy to cut, last for a long time, and healthier for humans. Meanwhile, fiberglass wraps are cheaper but more hazardous and difficult to handle. If you do choose to use a fiberglass wrap, make sure you are wearing long sleeves and wear proper protective gear.

Insulation can be made of cellulose, fiberglass, polyurethane, polystyrene, or mineral wool. Radiant barriers are often made of aluminum or other similarly reflective materials, but they will need to be paired with something else because they don’t provide heating benefits. Cellulose is among the most eco-friendly options and may be recycled when it’s past its shelf-life, whereas polyurethane and polystyrene both emit harmful compounds and will need to be handled with care during installation.

Generally, the cost of ice dam removal is not covered by homeowners insurance because it is often considered preventable maintenance. However, the damage caused by ice dams is frequently covered. Depending on your policy, this can include interior water damage, roof collapses, and damage to shingles. Coverage for personal belongings affected by leaks may vary. It is important to check your policy details or contact your insurer to confirm what your plan covers. Keep in mind that any damage resulting from a DIY attempt to remove an ice dam will likely not be covered.

Each of the three types of wool insulation has particular disadvantages. While their R-value is higher, they all cost more than fiberglass versions. Installing mineral wool and sheep wool requires protective gear. Because of its vulnerability to insects, chemicals are used in its production. Hemp wool is more costly to install than other types because additional tools and labor are involved.
