"Our chimney needed to be removed because it wasn't stable. He came out and gave a bid for removal. We had another company come out and give a bid but their bid was only the removal and this other company would just put a tarp up over the removal and I'd have to get carpenters to fill in the gap. This bid included replacing the roof and siding so I only had to deal with one company. He communicated well about the project and let us know he'd be back to finish the job and that it would be done by a certain date and it was and it matched the estimate he gave us."

"James came and provided a quote for the extensive work that needed to be done. He was very knowledgeable and his quote was reasonable, especially given some of the other quotes I got from other companies. The job was done in the anticipated time-frame and all the debris was cleared away at the end. It was as clean in the area after the work as before it started. The inspection went off without a hitch, and James came back promptly to finish the last touches on the final steps. I couldn't be happier. I highly recommend you check out Dr. Chimney and use their services. They're great! They also said they do the annual chimney sweep maintenance. I'm looking forward to seeing them annually for years to come."

Chimney Sweep FAQs, answered by experts

It is generally not safe to live in a house with smoke damage, as even minor damage can pose long-term health hazards and structural risks. While it might seem safe temporarily depending on the severity, you should relocate if there is major damage or visible soot. Smoke smells and residue contain dangerous particulates and chemical compounds, including carcinogens, that are hazardous to breathe and can cause respiratory issues. These signs of damage are not always visible but can have dangerous short-term and long-term effects on your health, belongings, and your home's structural materials. You should not stay in the house until a trained professional from a smoke remediation or restoration company has assessed the damage and determined it is safe to return. Your insurance company may cover the cost of alternative housing while the professional work is completed.

Hard materials like glass, metal, and hardwood floors, washable fabrics, and undamaged electrical appliances can often be salvaged after a fire, although it depends on the extent of the damage. For washable fabrics, make sure to use a phosphate mix during the washing process to extract the smoke smell. There are a few things you should throw away after a fire, like canned foods and cosmetics, even if they don’t look like they’re damaged.

Luckily, you can typically eliminate your microwave’s burnt smell within a few hours for most situations. Be sure to let it air out for two to three hours after cleaning to let the odor evacuate your home—if you close your home up too early, the odor will be trapped. For stronger, more stubborn burnt smells, it might take a full day or more to really notice a difference.

Yes, carpets should be replaced after a house fire or significant smoke damage, even if they appear undamaged. Smoke, soot, particulates, and chemicals can penetrate deep into the carpet fibers and padding, making complete removal a complicated and time-consuming process. If water was used to extinguish the fire, it can also soak through the carpet and padding, creating a risk of mold and mildew growth. Due to these challenges and potential health risks, replacing the carpet is the safest and most effective solution.

Call 911 immediately. If you have a fire extinguisher or fire blanket near the laundry room, you can attempt to extinguish the fire, but don’t open or touch the dryer. If you can’t put the fire out, evacuate yourself, your family, and your pets from the house, closing the laundry room door behind you. Turn off the electricity to your home via the outside fuse box, then wait for the fire department. After a dryer fire, have your home’s electrical system inspected to make sure there isn’t any damage.
