"A rep from Permalift came out to give us an estimate for piering our foundation. While he seemed to be a perfectly nice individual, I wasn't comfortable with his speech detailing how he waters his foundation 3 times a day even during watering restrictions, and that he doesn't care if the city tickets him. "They can ticket me all they want, but who's gonna pay for my foundation if it cracks?"
I understand that the soil around the foundation must maintain a certain level of moisture so the clay doesn't shrink so much that the foundation becomes unstable. However, this rep's blatant disregard for such a precious natural resource rubbed me the wrong way. I also understand that this particular rep's opinions aren't necessarily a reflection of the work performed by the company. I do hope, however, that the policy of the company reflects the fact that water is a valuable resource - one that is diminishing in our drought-stricken state - and that there must be some balance between property preservation and preserving this resource.

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

If you notice minor cosmetic problems with your driveway, you should seal it. Look out for cracks and holes on the surface, faded asphalt or concrete, and stains from oil and other chemicals. Replacing your driveway may be necessary if you’re dealing with significant problems—¼-inch cracks, large potholes, and puddles from drainage issues. The cost to install an asphalt driveway typically ranges between $4,200 and $9,000, significantly more than resealing. Consider talking to a professional to discuss whether resurfacing your driveway—a midway project between resealing and replacing—is a better option for you.

The cost to pour a driveway apron depends on the material and size. Concrete costs $3 to $10 per square foot, asphalt ranges from $2 to $5, and pavers are $5 to $15 per square foot. Additional expenses, like excavation, base material, and labor, can increase the total cost. For example, a standard 12x15-foot concrete apron could cost between $540 and $1,800, depending on local rates and additional work required. Always consult a local driveway paving contractor to get an accurate estimate tailored to your project.

Yes, recycled asphalt driveway costs can be substantially lower than new asphalt. With new asphalt costing between $90 and $190 per ton, this option can cost as much as 10 times more than laying down asphalt millings.

The dimensions of a driveway apron vary based on local building codes, the width of your driveway, and the distance between the driveway and the road. On average, aprons range from 12 to 24 feet wide and 8 to 18 feet long. Typically, the end of the apron connected to the driveway matches its width—such as 10 to 12 feet for a single-car driveway—while the end at the street flares out to allow cars to turn in and out more easily. In some areas, you may not be responsible for the portion of the apron that extends beyond the sidewalk, but this depends on local laws.

Building a road on a slope requires careful planning and will normally require a drainage system underneath to prevent flooding and damage to the road over time. Your professional may lengthen your road to create switchbacks if the slope directly to your home is too steep, as there are regulations for maximum road slope. The drainage system will help prevent runoff from the higher side of the slope from damaging the asphalt or concrete. Keep in mind that building a road on a slope isn’t a good DIY project, as a lot can go wrong.
