Roofing felt is the most common type of roof underlayment, likely because it has been around the longest. It’s called roofing felt because it is often made of felt soaked in asphalt. Depending on the type of roofing a home has, roofing felt comes in different thicknesses. 

If properly installed and maintained, roofing felt should last between 10 and 25 years. 

The most common defect in a flat roof is leaking. Flat roofs have minimal slope, so water pools more readily on a flat roof than on a sloped roof, and the risk of the waterproof membrane failing increases with exposure. Tears and punctures from foot traffic and blown debris are other common problems, especially with single-ply roofing membranes like TPO and EPDM roofs.

The amount of hail damage that warrants a roof replacement depends on the size of the hail. In many cases, a roof replacement is needed if your roof gets hail that is 1 inch or larger in diameter. You may also need to replace a roof due to hail damage if you notice several dents in the shingles or there are seven to 10 hail impact marks within a 10x10 foot area on your roof.

The four types of roof sheathing are plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), planks, and tone-and-groove boards. The overwhelming majority of homes use the first two (especially OSB) and the other two are not often seen outside of special use cases. Methods of sheathing include solid sheathing, open sheathing where there are gaps, and plank sheathing. Most roofs are solid sheathing.
