There are a few different types of flues out there, including throat dampers and top-mounted dampers. A throat damper will look like a piece of metal inside the chimney that is either opened or closed, while a top-mounted damper will simply make it so that you can see the daylight streaming in through your chimney from inside if it’s open.

Insurance companies weigh the amount of potential liabilities on your property to increase (or decrease) the cost of your home insurance. They will use several factors to decide if there are more chances for peril or injury to take place at your home. You can look at the duct damper’s lever to see if it’s open or closed. If the lever is parallel to the duct, the damper is open. If it’s perpendicular, the damper is closed. Alternatively, you can hold your hand against vents throughout your home. If you feel air coming out, that damper is partially or fully open. No airflow likely means that the damper is closed.
