When woodpeckers start banging on your walls or roof, they are probably looking for insects to eat, storing nuts for winter, drilling a hole to make a nest, or communicating with other birds to establish territory or find a mate.

The size of the hole can help determine the reason for the pecking. Small irregular holes are a result of insect hunts. Acorn holes are more consistently sized and often fitted with a nut in the middle. Nest holes are large and have rounded edges. A solution of one part bleach to 10 parts water or a disinfecting product that contains phenol (such as Lysol) is known to kill hantavirus and other pathogens found in mouse urine and feces. Simply spray this solution over and around the locations you expect mice to be living and running through, and the homemade disinfectant will do its job to rid your home of any feces and urine particles you could be exposed to.

Many different types of animals like to build nests in attics. The types may vary depending on your home’s condition and location and you can prevent them by sealing off entry points and eliminating food sources. The most common critters that like to build nests in your attic include:

  • Rats

Most bed bug infestations require two to four treatments within a three- to six-week span to eliminate. For smaller infestations in a less-than-average-sized home, you may only need one inspection visit plus one treatment visit. For severe cases or large homes, you may need quarterly, monthly, or semi-monthly visits from an exterminator.

Hanging wind chimes or motion-activated speakers near your home may be an effective way to deter woodpeckers, as sudden movement and sound often scare birds away. You could also try using reflective decorative items such as pinwheels or mirrors or placing decoys of large predatory birds in your yard. If these measures don’t deter the woodpeckers, you may need the help of a bird removal pro.
