"We had a very long retaining wall installed. They removed the old rock wall. The work was done carefully and safely. The finished project is beautiful. I highly recommend Southern Grove Landscaping. I tried to include before and after pic."

"The process was great! Collin met with us several times and listened well to the type of plants and installation we wanted. He was present to place all the plants and at the end of the process he came back and walked around the landscaping with me to explain plant care and maintenance. Austen and Peter were there the first day and planted everything properly and just as planned. Austen (foreman) kept me informed of the progress the whole time. Everyone (including the extra workers on the second day) were very polite and professional. Seth (the scheduler) kept me informed of the exact time they would arrive. The office staff was friendly and very helpful. They cleaned everything up before they left. Their price may seem a little higher than some, but the care they took planting, removing the horrible clay in the beds, adding compost to each hole as they planted, moving the existing landscaping stones to more appropriate spots and being flexible with customer input during the process made it all worthwhile. Thank you!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Your older home is an excellent candidate for masonry work if it features original brick exteriors or rubble stone foundations. In Marion, heavy clay soils cause stair-step cracking in brick walls and horizontal cracks in foundations, signaling structural stress. You should also watch for white efflorescence on basement walls or a leaning chimney. Address these warning signs immediately with a local professional to restore your home's structural integrity.

Helpful?

Completing masonry work directly enhances your indoor comfort. In OH, sealing and repointing foundations eliminate cold winter drafts and stop moisture intrusion. This keeps your basement dry and prevents harmful mold growth. Additionally, brick and stone absorb daytime heat and release it slowly, stabilizing your indoor temperatures. Repairing deteriorated chimneys also improves draft efficiency, making your fireplace or furnace operate safely and effectively throughout the cold winter months.

Helpful?

When planning masonry work, you must consider how it impacts surrounding systems. In Marion, shifting clay soils stress plumbing lines, HVAC ductwork, and framing. A local professional will assess whether foundation repairs interfere with your sump pump or drainage systems. For chimney projects, contractors inspect flue systems, gas lines, and roof flashing. Local regulations require permits for structural repairs, ensuring your home remains safe and utilities stay protected.

Helpful?

Routine maintenance for masonry work focuses heavily on managing water and temperature damage. You must inspect and repoint mortar joints regularly, as Marion experiences frequent freeze-thaw cycles that crack mortar and cause brick spalling. Keep your gutters clean and grade the soil away from your foundation to ensure proper drainage. You also need to schedule an annual chimney crown and cap inspection to prevent hazardous water infiltration before winter arrives.

Helpful?

Build a seasonal routine to protect your masonry work year-round. In spring, inspect your home for new cracks, spalled bricks, and frost damage. Summer provides the optimal dry conditions for a professional to complete necessary repointing and sealing. During fall, clean your gutters and inspect your chimney flashing before the cold weather hits. In the OH winter, observe and document any new damage or water intrusion to address the following spring.
