"Really well. We needed a half split system as we have a 100 + year old house with a boiler and required air conditioning for health reasons. We didn’t want to have to deal with window air conditioners or removing the boiler system to replace with a forced air system; the half split was the best choice. Sal’s had the most reasonable bid and was very prompt in scheduling and installing. Every person we dealt with from Sal’s was professional, kind and had wonderful senses of humor. Grade A+ all around."

"No high power sells pitch, just straight honesty. Noel came to my home to give an estimate, which included a discount for being an Angie s List member. He was very professional and knowledgeable. I gave him a 10% deposit and an appointment was set. Jerry arrived at my home to install soffit vents. He was very nice and professional and walked me through each step. While Jerry was installing vents, Juan and Kiko ran a vacuum test throughout my home to determine areas of heat loss. Afterwards, they sealed those areas and the basement around chimney and installed insulation in attic. They also installed baffles where soffit vents were cut to direct proper airflow for ventilation purposes. Noel built on site, an insulated wooden box with handles to cover the opening of my drop down attic, a major source of heat loss. They were very efficient and effective and cleaned up any debris and vacuumed my floor before leaving. My house is very cozy now at temp of 62. A & J is the BEST!!"

"ALL WEATHER WAS EXCELLENT. THIS WAS A DIFFICULT JOB WHICH ONE OR TWO OTHER CONTRACTORS REFUSED TO EVEN GIVE US A QUOTE. DAVE SMITH, WHO WAS HERE FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE WORK, WAS TOP RATE. HE AND THOSE WHO ASSISTED HIM KEPT EVERYTHING VERY CLEAN, GAVE US REGULAR UPDATES AND WERE VERY CONSIDERATE IN WHERE THEY PUT THE PIPING IN THE ATTIC. DICK GALIK, THE SALES PERSON WHO DID THE ESTIMATE WAS ALSO TERRIFIC. HE CAME 3 TIMES BEFORE HE GAVE US AN ESTIMATE AND EVEN OFFERED TO DO SOME EXPLORATORY WORK TO MAKE SURE THE DUCT WORK WOULD FIT OUR HOUSE. THIS WAS DONE BY DRILLING A HOLE IN THE UNDER THE ROOF AREA. ALTHOUGH THEY CHARGED US $75.00 TO DO THIS, THEY TOOK IT OFF OUR FINAL BILL SINCE WE HAD THE WORK DONE WITH THEM. WE WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM FOR HEATING AND A/C INSTALLATION."

Install Boiler questions, answered by experts

On average, you’ll need about two gallons of oil per day to heat your house when it’s 50 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Most oil tank capacity is about 275 gallons, and heating your house with two gallons of oil per day will last about four and a half months. This consumption will vary depending on the climate and average temperature in your location. For example, if the winters are longer and colder where you live, you’ll probably need to refill your oil tank at least once to get through the winter.

The main difference between an outdoor wood furnace versus an outdoor wood boiler is what each appliance is heating. An outdoor wood furnace burns wood to create heat, which warms the air and moves it through the ducts in your home. An outdoor wood boiler uses the heat from burning wood to warm water, which goes through pipes to radiators in the home.

If you go to turn it counterclockwise and it won’t turn anymore, it’s open. Like most other valves, you should be able to turn a radiator valve counterclockwise (to the left) to open it and clockwise (right) to close it. To close a radiator valve, turn it clockwise until you meet some resistance and can’t turn anymore, but do so carefully to avoid breaking the valve.

No, boilers and water heaters are not interchangeable because they serve different primary functions. Boilers are used for central heating systems, providing hot water or steam to heat your home. In contrast, a water heater's purpose is to supply hot water for daily household use, such as for faucets and showers. A water heater alone cannot supply the warm water or steam needed for a central heating system.

While they are not interchangeable, it is common to have both a boiler and a water heater. In fact, a conventional boiler often works best when a water heater system is already in place. The two systems can be combined to provide both heating and hot water, either by pairing a boiler with an indirect water heater or by installing a premade combination boiler-water heater unit. For home heating, some homeowners may also opt for a furnace instead of a boiler.

Always consult your manual for specific pressure numbers. Many expansion tanks come pre-pressurized at a specific PSI range, anywhere from 12 to 40 PSI, designed for a range of home boilers. You should not have to pressurize an expansion tank yourself, only the boiler system. If your system has a tank that needs to be manually pressurized, this is generally a job for professionals and their tools.
