Small jobs welcome

"We had our kitchen remodeled and the ceiling required attention as a result. They arrived when we expected them, quickly covered the floor and exposed walls and cabinetry, prepped the repair sites and laid the first coat and left for the day. Second day MR Simpson arrived, did what needed to be done with the plaster to make it dry right and be ready for the next day. Third day he arrived, finished the ceiling and it looked perfect! This man knows his work. He was very pleasant and professional, even cleaned the floor before departing.. We felt that we definitely had a professional drywall expert and that his price was reasonable. If we had more work of this nature we would definitely ask for Ceilings by Simpson LLC"

"I had a very positive experience. Getting the initial quote was easy. The price was better than the other quote we got. The installers arrived when they said they would and completed the job quickly. And the roof looks great."

"I was charged $25 additional for the distance of my residence from Dave's home.  He sprayed the gutters out, but left some mess on the lawn.  He was timely, and arrived when he said he would.

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

When steaming falls short, consider utilizing a commercial texture remover tailored for popcorn ceiling removal. Adhere closely to the manufacturer's guidelines and conduct a preliminary test in an inconspicuous spot to verify compatibility with your ceiling. This specialized product offers an alternative solution for stubborn texture removal, potentially streamlining the process while safeguarding the integrity of your ceiling surface. Remember, products like these may be high-VOC, so wear protective gear.

Yes, you can cover a popcorn ceiling, which is often more cost-effective and easier than scraping it off. Common methods include using ceiling-grade drywall, applying a skim coat, or installing beadboard panels to create a smooth, updated finish. Covering the ceiling can also protect you from asbestos exposure if the material contains it. However, it's important to note that this method only seals off the asbestos and does not eliminate it, which could be a concern for future renovations or home resale. If you suspect your ceiling contains asbestos, it's best to hire a local asbestos abatement company to test the material and manage its safe removal.

If your popcorn ceiling is asbestos-free and you are ready for a new look, painting is an option. As long as there is no flaking or other wear, a new coat of paint might be just the thing to refresh the old ceiling. The best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is to use either a paint sprayer or a thick roller to cover the popcorn texture fully. (Do not forget to dust it off beforehand!)

“Note that if you eventually want to remove the popcorn ceiling, a painted ceiling is a labor-intensive job to remove and will cost more,” says Bob Tschudi. “Once painted, the process of removing the popcorn ceiling requires physical scraping as opposed to a spray-and-scrape approach. It’s very labor-intensive, and thus more costly.”

It is often less expensive to cover a popcorn ceiling instead of removing it. Installing drywall costs $1.50 to $3 per square foot, whereas popcorn ceiling removal averages $7 per square foot. Another option may be installing beadboard panels over top, giving your ceiling a fresh and modern look.

Textured walls are a great way to hide imperfections left over by drywall installation, but many homeowners feel like it’s an outdated look, despite there being so many types of drywall texture. And while the textured walls of today are a far cry from the popcorn ceilings and faux stucco of our grandmother’s homes, if you want a more modern look or you want to install wallpaper, it’s time to smooth out your walls.
