"They were able to replace the skylight in less than 2 weeks after the quote. They did a good job and make the finish on the inside look good. A few weeks later, there was a heavy rain and my new skylight is no longer leaking like my old one that was replaced."

"We've had our roof replaced in the past but had leakage problems around the chimney.  I called Everlasting Roofing because of their superior ratings on Angie's List.  James came as soon as he was able and he inspected our roof.  He showed me pictures and explained it is his opinion that it is not a roofing problem, but a masonry problem.  Our chimney is in very bad shape, but we had no idea.  I am beyond impressed with the integrity of this company."

"I had a leaky skylight that gave up in December with our 3" rain. I called Van Martin, the estimator showed up, told me the out the door price and I gave him a deposit. While I am sure I could have price shopped this, I would rather get a quality job the first time around.... and I did. The employees showed up to do the job 47 degree day, both happy and cheerful when they got there, and left the same way, just 2 guys wanting to do a quality job for the company they worked for, and loved. This is not something I see much anymore. They matched the dimensional shingles that were on the house for close to 15 years, both in color and design, the skylight install was 100% solid, these guys cleaned up after themselves and made sure I was satisfied with the job before they left, and when they left, THEY thanked me for hiring their company for the job. Will I use this company again, absolutely, I am very satisfied that I was able to find a company that stands behinds their work, does quality work and the employees like working there, that speaks volumes about the company. Three thumbs up, I hope my review is helpful to others,"

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can cover up a skylight if you no longer wish to have it in your space. There are a few options for covering up a skylight. One option is to install a skylight cover or shade that can be easily opened or closed as needed, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Another option is to cover the skylight with a solid material, such as plywood or drywall, effectively sealing it off. However, when covering a skylight, it's essential to ensure proper insulation and waterproofing to prevent any issues in the future.

Leaks are the top concern for skylights, often due to improper installation or worn-out seals. Over time, water can seep in and cause major damage to your home’s ceilings and walls. Other common issues include condensation, which leads to mold, as well as physical damage from weather or debris. If they’re not sealed properly, skylights can also bring unwanted heat in the summer or cold in the winter, affecting your home’s energy efficiency and tacking on extra dollars to your bills.

Skylights might sometimes increase your homeowners insurance premium, but the increase is usually minimal. Some home insurance companies won’t adjust your premium with the addition of a skylight, so you can contact your insurer or your professional skylight installer to ask about any expected changes. It’s crucial to have an expert install the skylight, as insurance companies may not insure your roof or cover water damage that results from a non-professional skylight installation.

Yes, you can replace a skylight without changing the entire roof—if the roof is in good shape. First, you need to make sure the roof around the skylight is intact and free of damage. Quality installation is crucial to prevent leaks, including replacing the flashing, which seals the skylight to the roof. While replacing the skylight alone is doable, it can make sense to replace both at once to streamline the work, coordinate the warranties, and reduce the risk of future leaks. If you’re unsure, reach out to a professional for help in deciding the best approach.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.
