"We've had our roof replaced in the past but had leakage problems around the chimney.  I called Everlasting Roofing because of their superior ratings on Angie's List.  James came as soon as he was able and he inspected our roof.  He showed me pictures and explained it is his opinion that it is not a roofing problem, but a masonry problem.  Our chimney is in very bad shape, but we had no idea.  I am beyond impressed with the integrity of this company."

"With the exception of two glass block windows in the basement, we have had Empire Windows replace all the windows and a sliding glass door in our home.  The actual replacements were installed between 1999 and 2003.  We have since had them come out for various small issues which they alway addressed with reasonable pormptness.  They even left me with a bag of replacement flip-up tabs for my sliding windows.  We've always been happy with the friendly, professional service Empire has provided.  We like our windows very much.

Skylights questions, answered by experts

The most popular treatment for a skylight is skylight shades. There are five primary types: manual, motorized, blackout, cellular//honeycomb, and Venetian. Motorized skylight shades are the most convenient, especially for skylights that are higher up, but manual shades are the most cost-effective treatments. Cellular/honeycomb shades are a perfect option for anyone who wants energy efficiency and an attractive look.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

Yes, you can replace a skylight without changing the entire roof—if the roof is in good shape. First, you need to make sure the roof around the skylight is intact and free of damage. Quality installation is crucial to prevent leaks, including replacing the flashing, which seals the skylight to the roof. While replacing the skylight alone is doable, it can make sense to replace both at once to streamline the work, coordinate the warranties, and reduce the risk of future leaks. If you’re unsure, reach out to a professional for help in deciding the best approach.

Ceiling costs depend on many factors, such as the material used and size, but coffered ceilings are considered one of the more expensive ceiling options. If you want to install a coffered ceiling but have a limited budget, consider using plywood instead of hardwood—it costs $2–$4.50 per square foot, while hardwood can be as much as $20 per square foot.

Professionals repair or seal a skylight by inspecting for damages, resealing any gaps with appropriate weatherproofing materials, replacing cracked glass or seals, and ensuring the frame is tightly fitted to prevent future leaks and ensure proper drainage.
