"Fireplace had a previous problem of shutting down on its own that seems to have gone away after the thorough work done by Mid-Valley. They also provided a report at the end of service that was quite helpful."

"We got a 350 paver patio, firepit and seat wall in our back yard. We also had Chris and team fill in an empty area with weed barrier and creek jack (stone). We signed in July, and was told the calendar had us pointing to an October installation. With a very rainy fall, Chris's team kept getting delayed, but Chris did a great job communicating and discussing status with us. Winter arrived, and we didn't get installed until March, but again, Chris kept us in the loop, and I can't really blame him for the weather. Chris has a large backlog of work because of the quality, care, and craftsmanship of his work. He went above and beyond (adjusted some gutters for us, as well as added a pad of concrete at the bottom of our deck stairs to ensure we were setup correctly). If you want a paver patio, walkway, retaining walls, etc.. done right the first time, call Yanton's, they will do it right. We couldn't be more pleased with the patio."

"Jason was very good at coming to the house and asking questions, and giving me advice on what he saw, and what could be done. He then sent an estimate in a timely fashion, as well as got the work done, and made certain it was complete and satisfactory before asking for the final payment.. He and the people that did the work were all honest, polite, helpful, and a pleasure to do business with. I will certainly call Friedman Home Improvement and Masonry the next time I need work done."

"They made my ugly duckling yard into a beautiful swan. They worked hard getting out rocks and dead plants. They came up with a beautiful arrangement of perennials. They did everything with excellence. They put concrete under the border wall. They broke up an old concrete patio and repoured it correctly with good stones and rebar. It all looks so beautiful and was done with integrity. They were very polite."

"Had Betts Structural Engineering come and look at the foundation of a house we were in contract on. Josh came out and was professional and informative. He informed us the foundation was failing and explained what needed to be done. He throughly explained everything and told us how we could do it ourselves for much cheaper than a contractor could do it. In the end he saved us from a long and expensive process if we proceeded with the house."

"Have had Tri-State do several projects. All have been done quickly and well. Latest was cutting an egress window into a concrete foundation for a lower level walkout. Tri-state had to coordinate several employees to do the job and it turned out great! Along the way they picked up a few smaller jobs and handled equally well. They make sure to do things the right way as well, which I appreciate."

"Mike conveyed what needed to be done for my water problem. He explained it in detail; didn't try to hurry his presentation. His crew completed the job in 1 day. They did provide plastic sheeting to try to contain as much of the concrete dust as possible. Very efficient."

"The crew worked efficiently and made a great deal of progress every day on my multi day project. They took great care to minimize any damage to my property. They prepared the site so as to provide a solid support for the concrete drive ensuring a long life for my concrete drive. The framing was carefully installed to ensure proper water run-off and look good also. The concrete was skillfully finished and looks great. I am very happy with the results. I would not hesitate to employ LNS in the future. David B."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Masonry work tends to be more expensive because the materials can be costly, such as natural stone and brick. Masonry is also very labor intensive, typically making up 50% or more of the final project cost. In addition, quality masonry work requires years of training and experience, as with any skilled trade.

If your old bricks are in decent condition and you have the space to store them where they’ll be protected from the elements, keeping old bricks is often worthwhile. You’d spend anywhere from $70 to a few hundred dollars to have them removed from your property, in which case you won’t be able to use them for future projects. Holding on to old bricks in good condition means you can use them later for other DIY projects, potentially saving yourself some money on disposal and new materials down the road.

Do not use super glue to hang lights on brick unless you want your lights up year-round. Hot glue is a better choice because it’s easily removable with a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Super glue is very hard to remove, and you could tear off parts of the brick in the removal process.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

Drilling into brick or mortar requires the use of a masonry drill bit. Masonry drill bits appear similar to standard drill bits except for the leading tip of the bit. The tip has a bulky carbide arrow-shaped end slightly larger than the rest of the bit shaft. Standard or high-speed drill bits designed for making holes in wood or metal don’t have the ruggedness or design shape you need to drill into brick. They may not go through the brick at all, and if they do, they’re more likely to overheat, crack, or dull before you finish drilling.
